Mellor Given A

Press Release

PENTICTON, BC– The Penticton Vees Hockey Club is pleased to announce Sam Mellor as an Assistant Captain for the 2012-2013 season. Mellor joins fellow Assistant Captain Wade Murphy and Captain Troy Stecher in the Vees leadership group.

Mellor is currently in his first season with the Vees, after playing one NCAA hockey season at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. In his freshman season, Mellor recorded 4 goals and nine points in 33 games with the Seawolves. Prior to Anchorage, Mellor played two seasons in Trail with the Smoke Eaters, compiling 61 goals and 130 points in 104 games. The Cranbrook native was also a member Team Canada West during the 2010 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge in Penticton.

Mellor says its humbling being picked as a leader, “It’s a big honour, as there have been some amazing players here in the past that have worn a letter.” He also welcomes the challenge that is associated with being a captain. “I’m an older guy and I should have that responsibility. I look forward to helping out the younger guys on our team.”

Head Coach & GM Fred Harbinson says Mellor is a veteran influence the team needs, “Our players all strive to play at the next level; Sam has played in the NCAA and understands the commitment it takes. Sam will help guide our young players through the ups and downs of junior hockey and will be counted on in all situations.”
