Vees Name Schug Captain

Press Release

The Kingston Voyageurs have announced that Michael Schug will be the captain for the 2012-13 season and Aidan Wright and Graham Yeo will be the Assistant Captains. Schug is entering his third season with the Vees and was an Assistant Captain last season and brings a lot of strong leadership qualities to the table and was an easy choice to be the Vees Captain.

Schug replaces David McMullen, who wore the Captain “C” for two seasons for the Vees after McMullen graduated and left to attend school at the University of Lethbridge. Prior to McMullen dawning the “C”, it was Kevin Christmas and before him was Tyler Hill, who captained the Vees to their Dudley Hewitt Cup Championship back in 2008.

“I’m very honored to be named the Captain here. This is one of the top franchises in this league and I’m just very proud to follow in the footsteps of guys like Mully, Christmas and Tyler Hill,” said Schug.

“Mike exemplifies the kind of leadership skills we look for in a captain. He carries himself well both on and off the ice and is someone that all the players respect and look up to,” said Head Coach Colin Birkas.

Aidan Wright, like Schug is also in his third season with the Vees and will sport a leader on his jersey for the first time this season. The Wawa, Ontario native played for Team Canada East last season and is a defensive mainstay on the Vees blue line.

“It’s a great honor to be an Assistant Captain for the Voyageurs. It’s the only Junior team I’ve played for and its become my home away from home and I couldn’t be more proud than to be an Assistant Captain for the Vees,” said Wright.

Yeo joined the Vees early last season and had a strong season and become one of the un-official leaders of the team last year. Graham was the winner of the Vees coaches award last season and will be expected to be a strong leader again this year as well.

“The choices of both Graham and Aidan for Assistant Captain were easy. They both work so hard away from the rink and they play the game the right way on the ice as well. They’re guys other players can look up too and they’re highly respected around the league,” said Birkas.

The Vees will host the Aurora Tigers on Thursday night at the Invista Centre.
