AJHL announces Players of the Week

Press Release

CHESTERFIELD, VA. - The Atlantic Junior Hockey League (AJHL) has announced that Philadelphia Little Flyers forward Sam Manzi (left), Philadelphia Jr. Flyers defenseman Quinton Neville (middle) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights goaltender Mike DeLaVergne have been named the Offensive, Defensive and Goaltender of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Oct. 21.

Manzi, from New York, N.Y., unleashed for five goals and two assists as the Little Flyers skated to a two-game sweep over the New Jersey Rockets. On Saturday, the 1993-born connected for four goals and two assists, including one on forward James Bonaguro’s game-winning marker, in an 8-4 victory. The next day, the 5-foot-10, 165-pounder notched the game-winning goal as Philadelphia downed the Rockets, 3-1.

“Sam is reaping the benefits of his hard work,” said Little Flyers head coach Steve Washkalavitch. "Combined that with his on-ice ability, excellent academic record and modest character, and he’s sure to have a number of college options to choose from.”

Neville, a Chandler, Ariz., native, registered a goal and assisted on forward Franny Mackin’s game-winning marker as the Jr. Flyers edged the Laconia Leafs on Saturday, 4-3. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Neville, a 1993-born, was held scoreless the next day in Philadelphia’s 2-2 tie with the Leafs.

"Quinton has been a great addition to our team and his contributions have allowed us to move him to our first power-play unit, " said Jr. Flyers coach Jerry Domish. "His vision and passing ability make everyone around him better."

DeLaVergne, from Pawling, N.Y., backstopped the Knights to a pair of victories over the Northern Cyclones, turning aside 65 of 72 shots. On Saturday, the 1992-born made 33 saves in a 5-3 triumph. The next day, the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder stopped 32 shots as the Knights bested the Cyclones, 7-4.
“On any given night, our two goalies (DeLaVergne and Luke Andriuk) give us a chance to win before the game even starts,” said Knights head coach Justin Lyle. “They’re among the best I’ve seen in this league.”
