Backs forward Gillies signs deal to Michigan Tech

Press Release

The Salmon Arm SilverBacks are extremely proud to announce that 17 year old Forward Alex Gillies has committed to play for the NCAA's Michigan Tech Huskies in the fall of 2014/2015.

The 5'10, 170lbs winger is known for his upbeat demeanor off the ice; and his high-end offensive talent and hockey IQ while on the ice.

The Vernon native came to the SilverBacks last season from the Okanagan Rockets Major Midget program where he notched 35 points in 40 games. As a 16 year old adjusting to the Junior “A” game Gillies transitioned quickly into a regular with the SilverBacks and managed to put up 10 goals and 8 assists for 18 points in his rookie BCHL campaign.

'Backs GM Troy Mick says Alex's growth as a player is a joy to watch, "He worked all summer to build muscle and focused in on his goals for the season which were obviously to put up some more numbers and nail down a scholarship. There have been a few nights when he's been the best player on the ice and it's amazing to think what kind of force he will be in a few years if he stays on this track."

Gillies has been on fire early in this season for the SilverBacks, posting 6 points in 9 games including a four point game two weeks ago where he put the team on his back with a two goal, two assist performance in a 4-3 victory over Nanaimo.

Alex has, "Great hands, great vision and a passion for the game. Like the rest of this team, he's a guy who hates to lose and brings that philosophy to the rink every weekend. We're ecstatic to see that his hard work has paid off and now we can work together to make sure he's ready for that big leap to the NCAA” continued Mick.

The organization is thrilled for Alex and his family; we would like to congratulate him for this accomplishment. We're excited to continue to watch him grow as a student and athlete, as he prepares for his future with Michigan Tech.
