DIENO’S OVERTIME WINNER GIVES RED CAMP-OPENING WIN OVER WHITE

Press Release

CALGARY, Alta. – Rhyse Dieno (Davidson, Sask./La Ronge, SJHL) scored 2:04 into overtime to complete Red’s comeback from a 2-0 deficit and give it a 3-2 win over White in the opening game at Canada West selection camp on Monday night.

Red was outshot 10-2 in the first period and trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes before pulling even midway through the second period on goals from Brett Boehm (Martensville, Sask./Flin Flon, SJHL) and Evan Richardson (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River, BCHL) just 1:23 apart.

After a scoreless third period, Dieno took a pass on the right wing from Russell Trudeau (Landmark, Man./Selkirk, MJHL) and snapped a shot past White netminder Michael Stiliadis (Woodbridge, Ont./Victoria, BCHL) for the winner.

Hudson Friesen (East St. Paul, Man./Selkirk, MJHL) and Patrick Lee (Calgary, Alta./Brooks, AJHL) scored the goals for White, which held a 26-17 advantage in shots on goal, but didn’t find the back of the net after Lee’s power-play marker at 12:48 of the first period.

Both teams switched goaltenders midway through the second period to give all four netminders in camp a chance to see game action – Stiliadis took over for Marc-Olivier Daigle (Delson, Que./Drayton Valley, AJHL) in the White goal, while Curtis Skip (Grande Prairie, Alta./Grande Prairie, AJHL) replaced Chad Katunar (Victoria, B.C./Penticton, BCHL) for Red.

Red will go for a 2-0 camp when it faces Blue on Tuesday night at the Markin MacPhail Centre (7 p.m. MT), while White will try for a split of its intrasquad games in the camp finale against Blue on Wednesday (7 p.m. MT).
