KEARNEY, Neb. - Storm head coach Josh Hauge announced his captains for the 2012-13 season on Wednesday in advance of an upcoming series with in-state rival Omaha this weekend.
Third-year USHL veteran Brian Ward was named captain, while Tim Bonner and Heikki Liedes were made assistant captains.
“All
these guys have been here for my entire tenure so they know what we’re
trying to do here,” Hauge said. “We’re not off to the start that we
wanted, but with giving these guys more responsibility and showing
everyone they’re our leaders, I think it will give us the kick we need
to get over the edge and they’ll take a lot of pride and responsibility
in leading us”
Ward,
a native of Haverhill Mass., has 20 goals and 14 assists in his career
with the Storm that has now spanned parts of three seasons. Through five
games this year, he leads the team with three goals.
“I’m
just excited; it feels good,” Ward said. “I’m just trying to lead by
example. I’ve been a little more vocal the past couple weeks and I’m
just trying to step up and take the team in the right direction.”
Bonner
and Liedes are each playing in their second season with Tri-City.
Bonner, a native of Osseo, Minn. finished the 2011-12 season with 21
goals and nine assists, while Liedes, who hails from Hameenlinna,
Finland, had 12 goals and five assists.
“Tim’s
just very likeable,” Hauge said. He’s a no nonsense kid who has a great
ability and he’s a guy you can go and talk to if you have any issues.
Heikki is a warrior, a battler, and a guy who brings it every single
night. He approaches the game like a pro, he’s very meticulous and
detailed and will do whatever it takes for the team to win, whether that
means he has to fight, block a shot, or score a goal.”
