Defenseman Commits to Eagles Program

Press Release

The defending NCAA national champion Boston College Eagles have received a commitment from Ian McCoshen, one of the most sought-after hockey prospects in the United States, the Waterloo Black Hawks announced Friday.

McCoshen is in his third season with the Hawks after debuting in the United States Hockey League as a 15-year-old.  Through his first eight appearances of 2012/13, the 6’ 3,” 210-pound Hudson, Wisconsin native has a USHL-leading +13 plus-minus rating, while being credited with a goal and three assists.  On October 29th, he was named the league’s CCM Defenseman of the Week.  Last season, McCoshen had eight goals and twelve assists in 55 regular season games.  He added another seven points and was +4 as the Black Hawks reached the Clark Cup championship series.  As a rookie, McCoshen made 42 appearances and recorded six assists in 2010/11 before reaching his 16th birthday.

“Ian is a special player.  His size makes him a candidate for the early rounds of the NHL draft, and his mental approach is remarkably mature,” said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O’Handley.  “Most importantly, he is a great kid.  His best games in Waterloo, and in his hockey career, are still ahead of him.”

Over the summer, NHL Central Scouting graded McCoshen as an “A-prospect” for the 2013 Draft, making him a candidate to be selected in the first round.  Last January, he appeared during the 2012 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, one of only a handful of players who was not eligible to be drafted in 2012.

McCoshen appeared for the U.S. Junior Select Team at the 2011 World Junior A Challenge in November 2011, earning a bronze medal; he was selected to return for the 2012 tournament, but could not participate due to illness.  In August 2012, McCoshen was the Black Hawks captain during another international event, helping Waterloo to silver at the 2012 Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia.

With the commitment, 16 members of the 2012/13 Black Hawks have been recruited to join an NCAA Division I program after completing their junior hockey careers.

Boston College is currently the #1 ranked team in the nation, according to the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.  Head coach Jerry York’s roster currently includes Waterloo alumni Parker Milner and Patrick Wey.  The seniors have each won two national championships during their college careers.
