Press Release
YARMOUTH, N.S. – Austin Plevy (Langley, B.C./Chilliwack, BCHL) scored
the aggregate winner with 2:42 to go as West won the President’s Cup
with an 8-6 overall victory despite a 6-3 loss to East in the second
CJHL Prospects Game on Sunday afternoon.
It’s the second year in a row West has won the prospects competition, and the fifth time since the inaugural event in 2005.
Down
5-0 heading into the back-end of the two-game, total goal series after
being blanked Saturday night in Digby, N.S., East got on the board early
when Joe McKeown (Campbellford, Ont./Wellington, OJHL) scored just 2:24
in.
Aidan Wallace (Markham, Ont./Pickering, OJHL) made it a 2-0
game just over two minutes later, and goals from Derian Plouffe (Nepean,
Ont./Kanata, CCHL) and Brandon Pye (St. John’s, N.L./Truro, MHL) late
in the first period pushed the East advantage to 4-0 after 20 minutes
and cut the West aggregate lead to just a single goal at 5-4.
West
finally got one back early in the second period thanks to a shorthanded
marker from Ryan Berlin (Edmonton, Alta./Whitecourt, AJHL), but
Wallace’s second goal just past the midway point of the period got East
within a goal again.
Jesse Lussier (Petawawa, Ont./Kemptville,
CCHL) brought East all the way back with a goal 5:21 into the third
period, but Plevy got the winner late, stepping into the slot and
rifling a shot over the blocker of Hayden Lavigne (Brampton,
Ont./Wellington, OJHL).
Berlin rounded out the scoring for West by converting a late breakaway for his second of the game.
Just
as they did Saturday night, all four goaltenders saw time between the
pipes – Lavigne and Chase Marchand (Halifax, N.S./Amherst, MHL) split
the duties for East, while Ty Edmonds (Winnipeg, Man./Virden, MJHL) and
Marc-Olivier Daigle (Delson, Que./Drayton Valley, AJHL) saw 30 minutes
of action each for West.
