MONTREAL (May 30, 2012) – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the signing of defenseman Nathan Beaulieu to a three-year contract (2012-13 to 2014-15). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

In 53 games with the Saint John Sea Dogs, Beaulieu finished tied for fifth in scoring among QMJHL defensemen with 52 points (11 goals, 41 assists). He was tied for third among rearguards in the league with 41 assists. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound defenseman scored four of his goals on the powerplay and one while shorthanded. He recorded 150 shots on goal, maintained a plus-41 plus/minus differential and served 100 penalty minutes. This season, Beaulieu helped the Sea Dogs to their third consecutive Jean-Rougeau Trophy (awarded to the QMJHL regular season champions), as well as their second straight President Cup (awarded to the QMJHL playoff champions).

Beaulieu ranked tied for third among league defensemen with 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 17 playoff contests. He tallied one of his goals on the powerplay. He displayed a plus-27 plus/minus differential and served 32 penalty minutes. Beaulieu added four assists in as many games at the Memorial Cup tournament in Shawinigan. He suited up for Canada at the 2012 World Junior Championship in Alberta, posting one assist, 13 shots on goal and 16 penalty minutes in six games.

“It’s really exciting to sign that contract. That’s something you work your entire life for and it’s really special when it happens,” shared the 19-year-old blue-liner. “I look at it as something that will motivate me that much more in the gym to work even harder. My ultimate goal is to make the jump to Montreal next year. This will help me in the offseason and hopefully I can come in to camp and make a good impression.”

A native of Strathroy, Ontario, Beaulieu, 19, recorded 152 points (37 goals and 115 assists) in 233 games since his junior debut with Saint John. He was part of the Saint John squad that won the Memorial Cup in 2011.

He was drafted in the first round, 17th overall by the Canadiens at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Last September Beaulieu took part in his first training camp with the Canadiens, appearing in three preseason games, recording one assist (0-1-1) and three shots on goal. JACKS FINALIZE 2012-13 TENDERS

Press Release

ODESSA, TX– The Odessa Jackalopes have finalized thirteen NAHL tenders for the 2012-13 season, the team announced Wednesday. Players from five different states were signed, including 2011-12 Jackalopes tender Ryan Webber of the NAPHL’s San Jose Jr. Sharks and Austin Ho, a defenseman from the Los Angeles Jr. Kings, who participated in Odessa’s 2011 main tryout camp in Prior Lake, Minnesota.

Among the players selected by the Odessa coaching and scouting staff are eight forwards, four defensemen and goaltender Blake Wojtala, a Trenton, Michigan native. With the departure of future UMass-Lowell River Hawk and NAHL Goaltender and Rookie of the Year Connor Hellebuyck, Jacks Assistant Coach and President of Hockey Operations Matt Cressman says, filling the void in net will be one of the team’s biggest challenges in 2012-13. “Obviously we’ve got a big hole to fill with [Hellebuyck] gone,” said Cressman Wednesday, “but it’s not just that, we’re looking for lots more goal-scoring and scoring touch and we’ve got complete faith in [Jackalopes Director of Scouting] Craig Sarner…we know he’s got lots of great players lined up for us.”

Odessa’s 2012-13 crop of tenders also includes NA3HL veteran Corey Sikich of the Quad City Jr. Flames and Johan Sjoden of the NAPHL’s San Jose Jr. Sharks. A pair of Minnesota High School standouts also caught the Jacks’ eye in the leadup to the team’s second NAHL season as Mahtomedi High School forward Tanner Jordan and Burnsville High School captain Mason Wyman notched a combined 42 goals and 103 points in just 53 total games played in 2011-12.

Other 2012-13 Jackalopes tenders include Colorado Rampage U18 defenseman Charlie Donlin, Michigan-native Steven Hayden of Detroit Catholic Central High School, Dallas Ice Jets forward and Wenatchee, Washington native Austin Azurdia, a pair of Chicago Young Americans U18 forwards Shaunak Pal and John Power and former D-man for the LA Jr. Kings, Cody Slocum.

All thirteen 2012-13 Odessa tenders will compete alongside returning Jacks players and NAHL draftees at the Jackalopes’ Main Tryout Camp, held July 26-29 at the Polar Ice House in Grapevine, TX. Registration is still open for the 2012 Jacks Tryout Camp and required forms and more information are available online at www.jackalopes.org. The 2012 NAHL Draft takes place Thursday, May 31st at 1:00 pm central.

One of the most respected blueliners in the OJHL, the 1992-born Hampton joined the Blades in 2010 from the Minor Oaks Hockey Association in Oakville, after playing six games as an affiliate member of the Burlington Cougars the previous season. Vernon Gets 2014 RBC National Championship

Press Release

Hockey Canada has awarded the 2014 RBC Cup to Vernon. Dean McIntosh, Hockey Canada’s Director of Marketing Services and Special Events, chaired the selection committee that settled on Vernon as the host for the May 2014 tournament. He called Vernon Bid Committee Chair Mike Lane early Saturday morning from Hockey Canada’s Annual General Meeting in Halifax.

Lane says, “I was so excited that I wanted to run up and down the street shouting that we won the bid, but we needed to keep it under our hats until Hockey Canada included the announcement in its AGM Notes on Sunday.” Lane advises that the bid is contingent upon signing a contract with Hockey Canada. He adds, “As soon as possible, we also plan to sign agreements with the Wesbild Centre and other local participants.”

A June 16 Kickoff Rally will feature a Hockey Canada representative, appearances by former Vernon Vipers and Vernon Lakers, and short speeches by Mayor Sawatzky and RDNO Chair Patrick Nicol. At the Rally, fans will learn details about ticket sales, volunteer opportunities, and sponsorship opportunities. Further details about that Rally will be provided by May 30.

Vernon last hosted a National Junior A championship back in 1990 at the Vernon Civic Arena. That was an amazing year when the Vernon Lakes shocked the New Westminster Royals 6-5 in overtime to win the Centennial Cup.

PERRIN NAMED SPIRIT HEAD COACH

Press Release

Stouffville Spirit Assistant Coach Jeff Perrin (photo credit - Brian Watts/OJHL Images) has been named as the new Head Coach of the club, replacing Craig Donovan, who guided the Spirit to its first OJHL title.

The 41-year old native of Whitechurch-Stouffville takes over the head coaching role after spending the previous 10 years, split between Stouffville and the Markham Waxers, as an assistant.

Below is an article written by Michael Hayakawa of the York Region Media Group (yorkregion.com):

As an assistant coach in tier two junior A hockey for 10 seasons, Jeff Perrin was hoping to be considered for a head coaching position.

For the 41-year-old Whitchurch-Stouffville resident, that time has finally arrived.

With Craig Donovan stepping down as head coach of the Stouffville Spirit after the Dudley Hewitt Championships in Thunder Bay, Perrin, who served as an assistant coach with the Ontario Junior Hockey League championship club, was recently named as the new coach for the 2012-13 campaign.
Donovan and his family have moved to London, Ont., where he works in the insurance industry.

Launching his assistant coaching career with the Spirit for three seasons before joining the Markham Waxers for six and then returning to Stouffville part way through this past campaign, Perrin is excited with the prospects of taking over the head position.

“It feels pretty good, it’s an exciting time in my coaching career,” Perrin said. “I wanted a chance to prove that I could be a head coach and it will be a challenge for sure. You always hope it will happen sooner or later.

“Part of the reason why I came back to Stouffville when the opportunity came up (last year) was that there would be a chance the head coaching position would open.”

Among the challenges facing Perrin will be the bar set by the Spirit last season after winning the Buckland Cup and falling just short of advancing to the RBC Cup championships in Humboldt, Sask.

“There’s definitely some pressure after what we accomplished last year. It’ll be tough to top that,” he said. “But that’s why coaching is a challenge.”

Perrin said he doesn’t intend to make any dramatic changes.

However, he hopes the club will be able to carry over some of the little things they had developed during the postseason into the upcoming season.

“Maybe we have to be a little more aggressive with our forecheck and that was something we did at the end of the year and that’s why we had a great amount of success,” he said. “And we also learned how to block shots more and in getting to the net and creating more traffic there.”

Perrin wasted little time in naming his assistant coaches. Brad Barton will work with the defence and Steve Sedore, who was with the Newmarket Hurricanes as an assistant coach under Perrin’s brother, Brian, and was head coach of the Spirit during its formative years, will work with the offence. Barton was an assistant coach with the Lindsay Muskies and now defunct Pickering Panthers and also coached with the Uxbridge Bruins Junior C club.

Whalers Second Round Pick Alex Peters Commits to Plymouth

Press Release

PLYMOUTH – Plymouth Whalers general manager and head coach Mike Vellucci announced the signing 15-year-old defenseman Alex Peters, who was taken by the Whalers in the second round (31st overall) of the 2012 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

Peters will attend high school at the Plymouth-Canton Education Park.

“I’m overwhelmed,” Peters said. “It a great privilege to be part of the Plymouth Whalers organization. It’s a happy day. I can’t wait to get started.”

Peters – 6-foot-4 and 188 pounds, from Blyth, ON – scored 11 goals with 7 assists for 18 points and 20 PIM’s in 45 games for the Huron Perth Lakers midgets last season.

Peters is a member of the Whalers Extended Family. His older brother, Justin (now with the Carolina Hurricanes) played in the OHL from 2002-06 and finished his career with the Whalers in 2006. Another brother, Anthony, was a goaltender in the OHL from 2006-11.

“Justin spoke a lot about what a great place Plymouth is,” Peters said. “I’m a big body, have an active stick and make a good first pass. I consider myself a two-way defenseman. I’m good on the defensive end, but can also take the puck up ice and contribute some points.”

Peters seemed to improve as last season wore on – a fact that prompted the Whalers to select him in the second round.

“I got more confident throughout the year,” Peters said about last season. “I felt more comfortable with my stick and started to jump up in the rush.”

The Plymouth coaching staff received their first look at Peters during the team’s Rookie Orientation May 19-20 and Peters – who played in the camp as one of the youngest players on the ice - didn’t look out of place. He scored a goal and skated well.

“We were really impressed with how he played,” said Plymouth associate coach Joe Stefan. “He’s a big kid who skates well for his size. He’s got a pretty good head for the game and makes good decisions. He seems like a good kid and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the family. We know Alex will come here with a great work ethic and hopefully he’ll be a good player for us for three or four years.”

Peters is expected to report to Plymouth’s training camp at the end of August.

RON GAY PROMOTED TO GM/HEAD COACH OF THE ICE

Press Release

INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Ice announced today that Ron Gay has been promoted to general manager and head coach of the Indiana Ice. He replaces Charlie Skjodt, who will resume his role as president of the club.

Gay joined the Indy staff in September 2011 as the team’s skills development coach and also became head coach for the Indiana Jr. Ice U18 squad. He was added full time to the USHL coaching staff in January where he was part of Skjodt’s staff that swept Dubuque in the first round, before losing to the eventual Clark Cup champion Green Bay Gamblers in the Eastern Conference finals.

“Ron came in this year with no agreements in place after working with Indy standouts Daniil Tarasov and Sean Kuraly last summer and just wanted a chance to get involved with my franchise,” said Ice CEO Paul Skjodt. “We certainly saw the development of our players this year and that made a huge difference in our on-ice product. We feel very confident in his ability to fulfill the responsibilities of what we have built here in Indiana over the last eight years. The success that Omaha and Youngstown had this year is also a testament to what can happen when promoting from within your own organization.”

Gay arrived in Indy after a stint with the Capital Centre Pride hockey club in Lansing, MI where he spent time as the organization’s hockey director and as head coach of their AAA U18 team. In the summer months, he has helped train many NHL players including LA Kings defenseman Matt Greene and players Jeff Petry (Edmonton), Corey Potter (Edmonton), Jim Slater (Winnipeg) and Jason Zucker (Minnesota). He also works with former Indiana Ice stalwarts Torey Krug and David Johnstone.

“I am excited about the opportunity and the trust that the Ice organization gave me this year and now as our new General Manager and Head Coach moving forward,” said Gay. “We hope to continue to build on the success and standards that have always been in place here in Indiana. We have an excellent group of returning players and elite prospects coming in this year and it is now my job to instill the high standard of team play that encompasses the competitive level and spirit in the USHL.”

Taking over the reins for the Ice’s ninth season in the USHL, Gay’s immediate plans for the club include filling the remaining hockey staff and overseeing the Indiana Ice Main Camp in June. The camp is by invitation only and runs from June 14-17 at the Indiana/World Skating Academy (PanAmPlaza) in downtownIndianapolis.

He earned 14 of his 20 wins in the last two months of the regular season on his way to being named to Vaughn WHL Goaltender of the Month for March. During a January 6 game in Portland, Simpson set a new Everett franchise record with 55 saves on 57 shots in a narrow defeat.

In 175 WHL games, Simpson holds a 71-71-11-10 career record with a 3.02 goals-against average and a .911 saves percentage. He has three 20-win seasons and six shutouts in his Silvertips career. He was originally selected by Everett in the first round (#22 overall) of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft.

The United States Hockey League today announced the players named to the 2011-12 USHL All-Rookie Team as determined by a vote of USHL coaches and general managers.

The USHL All-Rookie Team recognizes first-year USHL players that were not classified as top-tier junior hockey veterans upon playing in the League this season.  The honorees include seven players; Omaha Lancers goaltender Alex Lyon, defensemen Mike Matheson of the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Nick Seeler of the Des Moines Buccaneers, Eddie Wittchow of the Waterloo Black Hawks, and forwards Taylor Cammarata of the Waterloo Black Hawks, Austin Cangelosi of the Youngstown Phantoms, and Kevin Roy of the Lincoln Stars.

“This was one of those great seasons where, looking around the USHL, you could say the future really is now,” said USHL President and Commissioner Skip Prince.  “These special first-year players, playing on six Member Clubs, all were impact players for their teams and teammates.  The USHL was a faster, tougher, more talented league because of their contribution, and they’re our rising stars.  Congratulations to this season’s All-Rookie Team.”

Alex Lyon (G), Omaha Lancers
The Baudette, Minnesota native posted a 28-15-3 record in helping the Lancers finish second in the Western Conference standings.  His 28 wins, 19 of which came on the road, tied for the second most among USHL goaltenders and he was third in the League with 2,761 minutes played.  The 19-year-old did not allow a goal in regulation during his first two starts of the season which were two of his four shutouts for the year, third most in the USHL.  Lyon recorded 49 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss on February 24th and was one save shy of the USHL season high by a goaltender.  He was selected to participate in the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January.  He is committed to play college hockey at Yale University.
