OHL Academic Players for February

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Academic Players of the Month for February, 2013, which includes Brett Hargrave of the Sarnia Sting, Ben Fanelli of the Kitchener Rangers, Brent Moran of the Niagara IceDogs, and Hunter Smith of the Oshawa Generals.

West Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the West Division is Brett Hargrave of the Sarnia Sting.  Brett has adjusted well to life as an OHL hockey player.  Brett is taking an academically challenging course load this year and completed first semester with a 76% average.  Brett is continuing with university level grade 11 math and science in second semester as well as a technology based course demonstrating his diverse learning interests. On the ice, Brett continues to work hard at the rink and has appeared in over 50 games as a rookie.

Midwest Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the Midwest Division is Ben Fanelli of the Kitchener Rangers.  Ben is described by his coaches and peers as the true “Ironman” of the hockey team. He is a very hardworking young man who exudes passion and confidence both on the ice and in the classroom. In his second year at Wilfred Laurier University Ben is already putting his studies in psychology to practical use as he has teamed up with Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club to start “Head Strong: Fanelli 4 Brain Injury Awareness”. This is a program that he brings to the community to raise awareness about, and support for those suffering from brain injuries.

Central Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the Central Division is Brent Moran of the Niagara IceDogs.  Moran, a 16-year-old native of Orleans, ON, is a full-time student at Governor Simcoe Secondary School.  He is described as an excellent student who is very diligent with his studies and very well liked by the staff and students at Governor Simcoe.  Moran was the IceDogs 2nd round selection in 2012 and is currently maintaining an 82% average so far in his rookie season where he was named to Ontario’s Under-17 team in December and competed at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Victoriaville & Drummondville Quebec.

East Division: The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the East Division is Hunter Smith of the Oshawa Generals.  Smith is taking a full academic course load in grade 12 at Henry Street High School. He is described as a very personable and dedicated individual by his teachers and teammates. Hunter has achieved an 83% average and plans to pursue a Business program at university next fall.
