SJHL RBC PLAYER OF THE MONTH - February

Press Release

RBC SJHL PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Tad Kozun, Nipawin Hawks
1993 F Tad Kozun (Nipawin SK) led all players in the final month of the regular season with 9-goals and 9-assists in 12-games played.  Kozun kicked off the month with a three point effort against Kindersley, then was held off the scoresheet before going on a 10-game point scoring streak.  Kozun had a pair of two-goal games as well as a couple of three-point nights.  He scored goals in seven of his team’s twelve games and ends the year eighth overall in league scoring with 25-goals and 29-assists in 50-games.  Kozun, who missed last year’s playoffs with an injury, is primed for the 2012-13 postseason and will be counted on to be one of the Hawks’ top performers going into the playoffs.

SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE MONTH
Matt Saunderson, Melfort Mustangs
1993 D Matt Saunderson (Saskatoon SK) has, quietly, had a steady, upward climb in his development over the last two seasons that he’s been a member of the Mustangs and he goes into the playoffs as one of their key pillars on the back end.  Saunderson’s last month of the regular season saw him score one goal and seven assists in ten games and also help his club secure a playoff berth after missing out in 2011-12.  Saunderson put up points in five of his last seven games and also got hot during a four game stretch in which he put up six assists.  He ends the season with 5-goals and 20-assists in 52-games played.

SJHL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
Ty McLean, Weyburn Red Wings
1995 F Ty McLean (Redvers SK), unfortunately, had his season come to an end last weekend when the Weyburn Red Wings, officially, missed the playoffs; but McLean did his part to try and keep the Wings afloat and was solid right up until the very last game as he ended the year on an 8-game point scoring streak.  He finished the month with 4-goals and 7-assists in 11-games played and had overall totals of 29-games played, 9-goals, and 8-assists.  McLean played the first half of the season with the WHL’s Regina Pats and it’s expected he’ll get another long look with them in 2013-14.

SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH
Matt Hrynkiw, Humboldt Broncos
1992 G Matt Hrynkiw (Saskatoon SK) capped off a SaskTel SJHL Goaltender Of The Year season by winning the monthly award to end the year.  Hrynkiw posted a 5-and-2 record and a 1.42-GAA and .946-SPCT, almost average numbers for Hrynkiw, who had incredible statistics all year long.  Hrynkiw posted a shutout to start the month, against Flin Flon, and then gave up two or fewer goals in five of his next six starts.  A model of consistency, Hrynkiw didn’t allow more than four goals in a game all season.  He ends with a 27-11-and-2 record to go along with a league leading 1.83-GAA and .939-SPCT.  He also posted a league high six shutouts.
