The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks forward Ty Rattie is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending May 12, 2013.
Rattie scored four goals while posting a +4 rating over four games in the past week as the Winterhawks managed a 3-1 record en route to capturing the 2013 WHL Championship. He was named MVP of the Championship series and also set a new WHL record for career playoff goals.
On Tuesday, May 7th, Rattie scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win over the Oil Kings in Edmonton, AB, in Game 3 of the series. Held off the score sheet in the Winterhawks’ 2-1 win in Edmonton on Wednesday and their 3-2 overtime loss in Portland on Friday, Rattie exploded for a hat trick, including two shorthanded goals, and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 5-1 win in Edmonton in Game 6 of the series that captured the Hawks the WHL Championship. Rattie’s hat trick in Game 6 gave him 50 career playoff goals, setting a new WHL record.
Rattie, a 19-year-old product of Airdrie, AB, is in his fourth season in the WHL with the Winterhawks. He led all WHL players in playoff scoring with 20 goal and 36 points in 21 games. The 6’0”, 176-lb forward is now a two-time recipient of Denny’s WHL Player of the Week honors in the 2013 WHL Playoffs, having earned the honor for the week ending April 21st. Rattie was selected by the Winterhawks in the first round, second overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, and was chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2011 NHL Draft.
The Western Hockey League has also nominated Mac Carruth of the Portland Winterhawks for the CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Carruth posted a 3-0-1 record in four starts this past week to lead the Winterhawks to the 2013 WHL Championship. Carruth, the WHL’s all-time leader in playoff games playedand playoff wins, allowed just six goals on 126 shots for a 1.46 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage in that span. Carruth, a product of Shorewood, MN, is a Chicago Blackhawks prospect.
