Defenseman Mathieu Henderson commits to Plymouth Whalers

Press Release

PLYMOUTH – Plymouth Whalers General Manager and Head Coach Mike Vellucci announced the signing 17-year-old defenseman Mathieu Henderson, who was taken by the Whalers in the seventh round (124th overall) of the 2012 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

Henderson will attend high school in the fall at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park.

“Mathieu’s a skilled defenseman who can rush the puck,” said Plymouth Assistant General Manager Brian Sommariva. “ In time, we think he can help generate offense on the power play.”

Henderson – 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, from Brantford, ON – scored four goals with five assists for nine points and 44 PIM’s in 37 games last season for the Caledonia Corvairs of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.    In 2011-12, Henderson scored 12 goals with 16 assists for 28 points at 12 PIM’s in 30 games for the Brantford’s 99ers minor midgets.  Henderson enjoyed an excellent playoff that season for the 99ers, scoring six goals with nine assists for 15 points in 17 games.

Henderson is expected to report to Plymouth in time for training camp in late August.
