Jujhar Khaira to Attend Silvertips Camp

Press Release

EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips today announced that 1994-born forward and Edmonton Oilers prospect Jujhar Khaira will join the club for training camp next week at Comcast Arena.  Khaira will then depart Everett to join other NHL prospects in Penticton, BC for the annual Young Stars Classic tournament before attending Oilers training camp in Edmonton.  Khaira’s playing destination for the upcoming season will not likely be known until after Oilers training camp.

“Jujhar is obviously an exciting addition to our training camp,” said General Manager Garry Davidson.  “I’ve had the chance to visit with him over the phone a couple of times recently, and of course he’s enthusiastic about the future after signing with Edmonton last week.  We look forward to having a player of his caliber here in Everett for camp and then he heads off to Edmonton and we’ll wait to see what happens with the Oilers.”

Khaira, 19, was selected by Edmonton in the third round (63rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and signed his entry-level NHL contract last week.  His WHL rights were acquired by the Silvertips in a trade with Prince George during the WHL Bantam Draft last May.  The Surrey, BC native skated for the Michigan Tech Huskies of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association last season, placing third on his team in scoring as a freshman.  Khaira generated 25 points (6g/19a) and 49 penalty minutes in 37 appearances for the Huskies last year.

Prior to being drafted, Khaira played two seasons at the Junior-A level with the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings.  He finished 10th among all BCHL scorers in 2011-12, lighting the lamp 29 times and racking up a total of 79 points to go with 69 penalty minutes in 54 games.  As a 16-year-old with the Spruce Kings in 2010-11, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound power forward finished with 42 points (10g/32a) in 58 games.
