FLORHAM PARK, NJ – The Metropolitan Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce its “Three Stars of the Week” for the period ending September 15, 2013. The three stars program is a weekly award given to the top performers in MJHL games, regardless of position, for the previous week. The awards are scored on a 5-3-1 point basis to assist in determining top performers for the year-end awards.
This week, Boston Junior Rangers forward Frankie Candalino (’95 birth year/Medford, MA) is the league’s 1st Star, Philadelphia Revolution forward M.J. Melanson (’93 birth year/Elkins Park, PA) is the league’s 2nd Star and Junior Rangers goaltender Mike Robinson (’97 birth year/Bedford, NH) is the league’s 3rd star.
Candalino was the offensive sparkplug for the Junior Rangers this past weekend as the 2012-2013 Francis Division Champion swept a pair of home games over Walpole (4-1) and the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs (6-3). Candalino picked up three goals on the weekend and added a pair of assists, including the game-winning goal against Walpole. Brand new to junior hockey, the Medford, Massachusetts native got his MJHL career off to a good start.
“Frankie was crucial to our success this weekend in defeating Walpole and New Hampshire,” said Junior Rangers Head Coach Rich DeCaprio. “He saw the ice in all situations. He brings a high-energy style of play on the ice and possesses the skills to put the puck in net. I expect him to have a great season.”
The league’s second star is Melanson. Melanson was an offensive force in the Revolution’s weekend home and home sweep over Washington. The Elkins Park native had seven points (3G 4A) over the two games and was a +7; all done without picking up a single penalty.
“M.J.’s strength lies in his skating and stickhandling and that showed thru this weekend,” said Revolution Head Coach John Ambrefe. “M.J. delivered that great speed as advertised and won many battles to the puck, which was how he produced those seven points.”
Rounding out this week’s stars of the week is Robinson, who piloted the Junior Rangers to their first victory of the season over Walpole in style, by making thirty-six saves in the team’s 4-1 victory. Walpole was unable to solve the 6’4” keeper before finally breaking through at 4:47 of the third period.
“Mike is a young goalie with big-time potential,” DeCaprio said. “It is hard to find a ’97 birth year with his size athleticism. He played very well for us against Walpole, making the big saves when we needed him to. I expect him to really develop this year in the MJHL.”
