SilverBacks forward Gillies fills net on way to POW honours

Salmon Arm SilverBacks forward Alex Gillies has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15, the league announced Monday.

Gillies scored the game-winning goal on back-to-back nights as the 'Backs took both ends of a home-and-home set with the rival Vernon Vipers. Gillies, a Vernon native, scored twice in a 6-1 victory on home ice Friday and was named the game's 3rd Star. The following night, the 6-foot, 190-pound 18-year-old scored twice in the third period and capped his night with the double-overtime winner to seal the hat trick and 1st Star honours.

His five-goal weekend puts him atop the BCHL with seven tallies on the season.
