Chiefs’ Mitch Holmberg named CHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that forward Mitch Holmberg of the Spokane Chiefs is the CHL Player of the Week after recording 10 points in three games for the week ending September 29 including five goals and five assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-6.

Holmberg helped the Chiefs continue their undefeated start to the 2013-14 WHL season earning three straight wins last week to bring their season record to 4-0-0-0 atop the Western Conference standings.  He recorded back-to-back four-point games including a two-goal and two-assist performance last Tuesday night as first star of a 6-2 victory over the Victoria Royals, then scored a goal and three assists on Wednesday night in a 6-1 triumph over the Royals.  Holmberg finished the week netting both goals in the Chiefs’ 2-1 win over the Tri-City Americans claiming first star honours.

Holmberg, a 20-year-old from Sherwood Park, AB, is playing in his fifth WHL season with the Chiefs.  He currently leads the WHL in scoring with eight goals and six assists for 14 points in four games after setting career-highs last season with 39 goals and 41 assists for 80 points in 66 games.

Also considered for the award this week was Detroit Red Wings prospect Anthony Mantha of the Val-d’Or Foreurs who scored four goals and five assists for nine points in three games, and Dallas Stars prospect Gemel Smith of the Owen Sound Attack who scored five goals and one assist for six points in two games.
