The Okotoks Oilers are pleased to announce that 1993 born defenseman
Tariq Hammond has committed to play for the University of Denver
Pioneers for the 2014-2015 season. Located in Denver, Colorado, the
Pioneers play in the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference
(NCHA). Recent AJHL alumni to play for the Pioneers include Joe
Colborne and Sam Brittain. The Pioneers are tied for 2nd in NCAA
Division 1 Hockey Championships with seven in their program's history.
Hammond joined the Oilers in the 2011-2012 season after playing his
Midget hockey for the Calgary Midget AAA Northstars. Now in his third
season with the Oilers, Hammond is currently tied for the team lead in
assists (9) and points (10). In his Oiler career, Hammond has played
108 games recording 8 goals and 41 points.
Oilers GM/Head Coach James Poole states, “Tariq has been outstanding
for the Oilers program on and off the ice in his three seasons and we
are extremely happy that his hard work has been rewarded with a
scholarship to Denver. Tariq was the Oilers Most Improved Player in the
2011-2012 season after leading all defenseman in Plus/Minus, and in his
3rd season has elevated his play to become one the top defenseman in
the AJHL at both ends of the rink. We look forward to Tariq’s continued
contributions this season and know that Denver will be getting a
quality player and person that will also be a great addition to the
Pioneers program starting next season.”
The Oilers would like to congratulate Tariq and his family for his
accomplishment. Tariq Hammond joins current Oilers Rhett Gardner (North
Dakota) and John Edwardh (Mass Lowell) off the 2013-2014 roster
committed to NCAA Division 1 programs.
