Mantha, Poirier and Marcoux named Telus players of the month

Anthony Mantha, Emile Poirier and Etienne Marcoux were named today the TELUS three stars for the month of October.

The first star is awarded to Val-d’Or Foreurs forward, Anthony Mantha. First round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in June 2013, Mantha had a total of 25 points in 10 games, an average of 2.5 points per game scoring 11 goals in all. Two of his goals were scored on penalty kills and he shot 53 times at the opposing team’s net, an average of more than 5 shots per game. He played two consecutive games of 5 points on October 11th and 12th against the Sherbrooke Phoenix and Drummondville Voltigeurs with 6-4 and 6-5 wins. In total he registered 7 games of 2 points or more. His performances in the past 31 days allowed him to increase his first place lead of QMJHL scorers. With 39 points, he’s already scored 19 goals.

The Gatineau Olympiques forward Emile Poirier is the second star of the month of October with 21 points, including 10 goals and 11 assists. His +/- demonstrated his efficiency with +11. Last month, he registered the winning goal in 4 games. Poirier, the first round pick of the Calgary Flames in 2013, got at least 1 point during each of the 14 games he participated. Moreover, he had a 6 game streak of at least one goal from October 2nd to the 13th. Poirier helped his team achieve the top position in the general standings with 28 points in 20 games. He is currently in 2nd position in leading scorers with 27 points, tied with Anthony DeLuca of the Rimouski Oceanic.

The third star of the month belongs to Etienne Marcoux, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada goaltender. Out of 6 games played in October, he won 5, with an average of 1.33 and save percentage of .944. Marcoux was credited with a shutout when the Armada won 4-0 in Moncton on October 10. He also played 4 games where he only allowed a single goal or shutout the opponent. His best game was was a few days ago when he was selected as 1st star against the Victoriaville Tigres, with 33 saves in a 3-1 win. He is currently ranked 1st among  goaltenders with a goals against average of 1.63.
