TURKU, Finland - Eleven players registered points, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team was clipped by Finland, 5-4, here this evening at Paimio Arena. The pre-tournament game precedes the 2013 Under-18 Four Nations Tournament, which features teams from Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.S.
"The guys played solid overall, but came up just a bit short. Today's game served as a good reminder of how hard you have to work to win in this tournament," said Danton Cole, head coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team. "We learned some good lessons today and will move forward in preparation of Sweden on Friday."
Goal scorers included Ryan Wagner (Park Ridge, Ill.), Alex Tuch (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Jack Dougherty (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Anders Bjork (Mequon, Wis.).
Edwin Minney (Wind Gap, Pa.) and Eric Schierhorn (Anchorage, Alaska) split time in between the pipes. Minney turned aside 12 shots, while Schierhorn kicked out 10 attempts. Team USA pulled its netminder with just over a minute remaining in the game, but did not find the equalizer.
Team USA went 0-3 on the power play and Finland went 1-4 with the man advantage.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team will open tournament play on Friday, Nov. 8, versus Sweden. The game will be held at Kupittaa Arena at 9 a.m. EST.
