The United States Hockey League today announced the CCM and Reebok player awards for the 16th week of the 2013-14 USHL regular season.
Winners include Tyler Sheehy of the Waterloo Black Hawks and Ryan McMurphy of the Tri-City Storm, recognized as co-recipients of CCM Forward of the Week; Corey Schueneman of the Des Moines Buccaneers, chosen as CCM Defenseman of the Week; and Collin Olson of the Sioux City Musketeers, named Reebok Goaltender of the Week.
Tyler Sheehy, F, Waterloo Black Hawks: The Burnsville, Minnesota native led the Hawks to a pair of weekend victories, recording five points (2g, 3a). On Friday night, he handed out a couple of assists, including one on the game-tying goal that forced overtime, in a 4-3 shootout win over the Fargo Force. Saturday night, he lit the lamp twice and dished out another assist in a 6-4 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints. His second goal held up to be the game-winner. The three-point night equaled a season high and was his second multi-goal game over his last seven contests. The 18-year-old is currently third on the team with 12 goals and tied for fourth in scoring with 24 points.
Ryan McMurphy, F, Tri-City Storm: Hailing from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, the forward doubled his season goal total over the weekend, tallying three goals and adding an assist in a weekend sweep of the Sioux Falls Stampede. On Friday night, he recorded a pair for the first multi-goal game of his USHL career and tacked on an assist during a 5-1 win. His second goal was the first shorthanded tally of his career and he also finished the night with a game high plus-three rating. The 19-year-old scored again on Saturday to help the Storm to a 6-4 win. McMurphy’s nine points (6g, 3a) in 26 games this season has already eclipsed his point total (2g, 6a) from all of last season (58 games).
Corey Schueneman, D, Des Moines Buccaneers: Committed to Western Michigan University, the 18-year-old had a huge weekend, recording five assists and a plus-10 on-ice rating to help the Bucs win two of three games. He recorded an assist and finished with a game-high plus-three rating in a 3-2 win over the Omaha Lancers on Friday. The Milford, Michigan native upped the ante on Saturday, handing out three assists and finishing with a career high plus-five rating in a 9-5 win over the Fargo Force. The plus-five rating equaled a USHL season high. He rounded out his monster weekend with an assist and a team-high plus two rating in a 5-2 loss to the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Sunday. Schueneman has produced 10 points (1g, 9a) while appearing in all 29 games for the Bucs this season.
Collin Olson, G, Sioux City Musketeers: The 19-year-old backstopped the Musketeers to a pair of wins over the weekend, while turning out a 1.00 goals-against average and .968 save percentage in the process. Making just his second appearance for the Musketeers, he stopped all 29 shots he faced in a 3-0 win over the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Friday. It was the sixth shutout of his USHL career. The 2012 NHL Draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes then made 31 saves in a 4-2 win over Muskegon on Saturday. Olson has won all three of his starts since joining the Musketeers, recording a 1.33 GAA and .960 SV% in that time. The Apple Valley, Minnesota native has posted two shutouts in five total starts this season.
