New Draft Rankings

Two separate draft rankings came out recently. The ISS released their Top 30 for the month of December.

1. Victor Hedman, LD 12/18/1990 L 6.06 220 Modo SweE
2. John Tavares, C 9/20/1990 L 6.00 200 Oshawa OHL
3. Matt Duchene, C 1/16/1991 L 5.11 196 Brampton OHL
4. Jared Cowen, LD 1/25/1991 L 6.04.7 218 Spokane WHL
5. Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi, LW 4/12/1991 L 6.01 198 Timra SweE
6. Jordan Schroeder, RW 9/29/1990 R 5.08.2 175 Minnesota WCHA

10. Brayden Schenn, C 8/22/1991 L 6.00 193 Brandon WHL

The list is pretty solid. The biggest thing I saw is Drew Shore ahead of Jeremy Morin. Albeit Shore is 11 and Morin 12th.

Mark Seidel released his Top 100 for December.

1 Victor Hedman 6-foot-7 225 LD Modo Dec-90
2 John Tavares 6-foot-1 200 RC Oshawa Generals Sep-90
3 Jared Cowen 6-foot-5 220 RD Spokane Chiefs Jan-91
4 Brayden Schenn 6-foot-1 200 LC Brandon Wheat Kings Aug-91
5 Matt Duchene 5-foot-11 194 LC Brampton Battalion Jan-91
6 Evander Kane 5-foot-11 168 LC Vancouver Giants Aug-91
7 Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi 6-foot-1 195 LW Timra Apr-91
8 Nazem Kadri 6-feet 182 LC London Knights Oct-90
9 Dmitry Kulikov 6-feet 190 D Drummondville Oct-90
10 Jordan Schroeder 5-foot-9 180 RW US Under 18’s Sept-90

Everyone has their opinion but he's missing some names like Simon Despres and Tim Erixon who you would find in other rankings. His comments on Philip Samuelsson is pretty harsh I think.

His size and reach initially had us excited, but the more we watch him, the more we realize his long-term potential doesn’t lie in hockey.

Okay maybe he won't have an NHL career of maybe he will have a Hall of Fame career. No one really knows just like every player listed. To say he has no career is pretty harsh. I think he will find places to play (NHL, AHL, and Europe etc) and make career in hockey.

That's My Take

Does Seidal even watch outside Canada major junior -- essentially his US pick were all USNDTP picks (he even initially had Schroeder incorrectly labelled as a USNDTP as opposed to Minny). and there's at least two east coast us prep school kids, Bennett and Kreider, who both have 1st round potential, nevermind not including him in the top 100. the proof will be in the pudding come June, but to turn his comments on Sameulsson around -- it'll be interesting to compare Seidal's list against the 1st 100 in June -- maybe Seidal's future doesn't lie in scouting.
