GATINEAU, QC – A strong second period helped Team Red get some revenge on Saturday night against Team White.
John Tavares (Oakville, ON/Oshawa, OHL), Jamie Benn (Victoria, BC/Kelowna, WHL) and Evander Kane (Vancouver, BC/Vancouver, WHL) scored three goals in less than 15 minutes as Red beat White 7-2 in the second of three intersquad games at the National Junior Team selection camp.
White took the first game by a 6-3 score on Friday night.
Red got things started on Saturday when Stefan Della Rovere grabbed a loose puck after a funny bounce off the boards and snapped a shot past White goaltender Tyson Sexsmith (Priddis, AB/Vancouver, WHL) on a Red powerplay just shy of the midway point of the period.
White tied the game quickly, as Jordan Eberle (Regina, SK/Regina, WHL) scored a rebound goal just 46 seconds later, but Red took a lead into the intermission on a goal by Kane, his first of two.
Brendan Smith (Mimico, ON/Wisconsin, WCHA) pulled White even early in the second period as he scored the nicest goal of the night by sneaking in from the point and wiring a shot past Red goaltender Dustin Tokarski (Watson, SK/Spokane, WHL).
But Red came on strong after that, retaking the lead and pushing its advantage to three before the end of the middle frame.
Benn and Della Rovere each scored their second goals of the game in the third to round out the scoring.
The third and final intersquad game of the National Junior Team selection camp goes on Sunday night at SBP Arena in Ottawa.
