From my initial roster after the 2009 World Juniors, 22 of the 23 players were invited to the camp. The only guy who was on my roster not invited was Max Nicastro.

I am very surprised Adam Brown isn't heading to camp. I updated my goalie selections after the Memorial Cup and put Brown as one of the two goalies. I think Lee and Campbell are the two favorites heading into the 2010 event.

I still feel comfortable with my forward selections. I will be intrigued to see how Chris Kreider and Zach Budish do at the camp. I feel if they have a strong start to their seasons, they can find a way onto this team.

One thing I am surprised is the lack of 1992 borns for the camp. After playing in the Under-18 Tournament, I expected Jon Merrill, Adam Clendening, Matthew Nieto, or Jason Zucker to be at the camp.

Any thoughts as to why Nicastro was left out? I thought he was a good bet to make the team, but not even to make the evaluation squad is a little shocking.

Brown did head to camp - just Hockey Canada goalie camp instead. Apparently he has dual citizenship.

I think that given the obvious returnee captain in Jordan Shroeder, my immediate initial thought is that for the third straight year this team will be captained at the blue line by a BU Terrier (Strait 2 winters ago, Shattenkirk last winter) in David Warsofsky, who captained this same group in the U18s two years ago and would have been on the U20 roster last year had the coaches not wanted to hamstring BU any further in what they knew was gonna be a special season for Jackie Parker, as on merit alone Warsofsky would have made the Junior roster for 08-09. That being said, and not that I am a BU groupie, Vinnie Saponari - who improved GREATLY in his first season at BU after having been only with US NTSD for the previous few seasons and having played on the Gold and Bronze winning U18 team in 06-07 and 07-08, has gotten bigger and stronger and I see him becoming the key to USA developing a second LEGIT scoring line (I also see this as his last year at BU), & having a singular line expected for ALL of the scoring is what has prevented The USA from winning in the Wilson-JVD-Shroeder days. And while I do not expect Kristo and whoever else winds up with Shroeder on the first line to have the chemistry of a line that played together and had experience and three superstars snd the je ne sais quoi in the Shroeder line of the recent Juniors past, when you combine the experience and leadership of Shroeder with newcomers WHO KNOW THE SYSTEM in Warsofsky and Saponari AND an improvement in the goalie position, I think that this team - which will have some of the same members who as U18s defeated Canada for Gold (which is huge for confidence because US traditionally thinks that they WILL get bad breaks and I dont think this group will fell that way) - will AT LEAST HAVE A SOLID CHANCE TO IMPROVE AND COMPETE IN THE GOLD MEDAL GAME IN 09-10. It might - check that IT WILL come down to 3 things - a)roster selection, b)coaching, and c)puck luck as the US can field a team that (particularly but not dependent on the assumption that Tavares is done at this level) WILL BE DEEPER IF NOT AS FLASHY ON THE FRONT LINE as the Canucks, and I think that lands them on the middle, highest step of the podium with gold hanging around their necks.
