Alberta supports the ENMAX Centre Expansion project

Press Release

LETHBRIDGE - Today, the Hon. Ray Danyluk, Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced that the Province of Alberta is providing $17.8 million in funding from its Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) to support the completion of the ENMAX Centre Expansion project.

“Over the years, the ENMAX Centre has been a hub of activity for citizens in communities across southern Alberta. I am pleased that the Government of Alberta can support an expansion project that brings communities together,” said Danyluk. “Throughout the province, MSI funding is having a real impact, by enabling local councils, like Lethbridge, to make decisions that meet the needs of their citizens.”

“The provincial funding announced today is in addition to the $3.7 million in funding from the province’s Major Community Facilities Program (MCFP) announced last December,” says Greg Weadick, MLA Lethbridge West. “The MCFP funding was based in large part on community support. Clearly the residents of Lethbridge and surrounding communities appreciate the value of having a facility of this caliber in the community.”

“Partnerships have made this $33.7 million dollar project possible,” says Mayor Robert Tarleck. “The City is grateful to the Province of Alberta for contributing almost two-thirds of the funding for an expansion project that will see about 41,000 sq. ft. of space and major new amenities added to the building.”

In addition to the funding from the Province, the City of Lethbridge will contribute $4.3 million and, in partnership with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, support a loan of $7.9 million which will be paid back through a combination of new facility revenues sources, and a contribution from the Hurricanes of $2.5 million over 15 years.

Demolition of a portion of the existing structure has begun, and the building is closed for renovations over the summer. Construction will be scheduled over a three-year period, with major construction phases scheduled during the summer months.

“During the height of the entertainment season the shows will go on,” says Tarleck. “The expansion is scheduled for completion in the late summer of 2012. Once the project is complete, the upgraded facility will continue to bring high quality entertainment to the city for another 35 years.”

Generals sign 3rd Rounder

Press Release

The Oshawa Generals continue signing up their draft picks for the 2009-10 Ontario Hockey League season.

General Manager/Coach Chris DePiero announced Tuesday the signing of defenseman Kyle Hope, the club's second 3rd round selection in May's Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

Hope played last season for the Chatham-Kent Cyclones Minor Midgets last season and is considered a solid prospect. He was taken 45th overall, right after Collin Sullentrop, who committed to the club recently along with first round selection Boone Jenner.

An offensive defenseman with very good skating and puck-handling skills, Hope will get every chance to show what he can do at the Generals training camp this fasll, according to DePiero.

"We're delighted that Kyle has committed to our hockey team for this coming season," DePiero said. "Our scouts identified him as a tremendous prospect and young man and we felt fortunate to get him when we did in the draft.

"Kyle is a smooth skater with a lot of offensive upside and we feel he's going to be a very solid OHL player for us for the next few seasons. We certainly welcome him and his family to our Generals family."

Hope had two goals and 15 assists for 17 points in 27 games last season with the Cyclones, along with 30 penalty minutes. He's 6-foot-2, 165 pounds and is a strong physical presence along with being a talented puck-moving rearguard.

"We're looking for certain kind of individuals to play in our organization and we're confident that Kyle is the kind of young man that is a great fit for us both off and on the ice," DePiero added.

The Generals also recently signed Jimmy McDowell, who played last season for the Detroit Little Caesars Under-16 team. The 12th round draft pick in May’s OHL Priority Selection turned in a strong season with the Little Caesars team and the promising young defenceman had a scholarship opportunity to go to Michigan State, but instead decided to join the Generals and will also report to the team's training camp next month.

In the playoffs, he finished tied for the team lead in assists (12) and was third on the team in points (13). Malysa signs with Plymouth

Press Release

PLYMOUTH, MI — Plymouth Whalers President, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Vellucci announced the signing of 16-year-old defenseman Nick Malysa, who was selected by the Whalers in the fifth round (99th overall) of the 2009 Ontario Hockey League Draft.

Malysa – who is from Bridgewater, NJ – scored a goal with 10 assists for 11 points in 21 games last season for the North Jersey Avalanche. The Central Scouting Bureau describes Malysa (pronounced Muh-LEE-sah) as "a puck moving defenseman who also plays very solid defensively. He is effective in all three zones, displays a high level of composure while possessing a combination of size, tools and hockey sense. Malysa is an excellent skater with a very smooth and effortless stride that provides him with quickness and great mobility. He is very good moving laterally, showing the ability to take away time and space very effectively."

"I like to play a stay-at-home style of 'D'," Malysa said. "I like to style myself after Tom Poti."

The Whalers saw some of Malysa’s talent during Plymouth’s Rookie Orientation Camp in May.

Malysa was already familiar with Plymouth and Compuware Arena, having played in a friendship tournament here last season with his North Jersey team against the Compuware, Belle Tire and Little Caesars programs.

“I’m very, very happy and very excited,” Malysa said today about signing. “At Rookie Camp, I got to see more of the rink and more behind the scenes about the program. The Whalers are a well-run organization. My education package helps out my family, so you get excellent hockey with the education. It’s a good deal. I’m happy to get started.”

Malysa will be attending school this fall at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park.

Malysa is the third selection signed from the Whalers’ 2009 draft class and the fifth player signed by Plymouth this off-season. Earlier, Vellucci signed Garrett Meurs (first round, 13th overall, 2009) and Stefan Noesen (fourth round, 64th overall, 2009), along with free-agent right-wing Austin Mattson (Livonia) and defenseman Colin MacDonald, who was taken by the Whalers in 14th round (270th overall) in the 2008 OHL Draft.

Malysa is expected to report to Plymouth’s training camp in late August. Plymouth’s first preseason game is Saturday, August 29 against Saginaw in Brighton, MI. The Whalers open the season on Thursday, September 17 in Windsor, with the home opener on Saturday, September 19 at Compuware Arena against Oshawa.

Grounds sign Lehner, Cousins, and Thomas

Press Release

Earlier today Soo Greyhounds General Manager Dave Torrie announced the signing of three players from this summer’s OHL Priority Selection and CHL Import Draft.
Forwards Nick Cousins (2nd Round, 2009 OHL Priority Selection) and Justin Thomas (4th Round, 2009 OHL Priority Selection) have both signed OHL Standard Player Agreements while goaltender Robin Lehner (1st round, 9th overall CHL Import Selection) has signed his transfer application and IIHF playing card.

For the Hounds 2nd round pick, Nick Cousins is expected to arrive in Sault Ste. Marie mid-August and begin to workout prior to the main camp starting. Team officials have high expectations for the Belleville, ON native and are excited of him joining the Hounds for the 2009/2010 season.

“We’re definitely excited to finalize the deal with Nick. We feel he has some special talents and is a gifted player. Our staff looks forward to developing those talents over the course of the next three to four years” stated Torrie.

For Thomas, the road to the red and white can take one of two directions this coming year. The Muncey, Ontario native will arrive in Sault Ste. Marie in time for training camp and has committed to playing the 2009/2010 season with either the Hounds or their affiliate franchise the Soo Thunderbirds (NOJHL). That is a decisions team management will be faced with making following training camp and exhibition play.

“Justin is a player who brings good size and skill to the team. With the number of returnees expected back this season, Justin will have to earn a fulltime roster spot. If that doesn’t happen this year, we are excited he’ll be a part of the Thunderbirds and will continue to work and develop him to be a part of next year’s team” explained Torrie.

Between the pipes, Robin Lehner is expected to arrive in the Soo on August 3rd where he will skate and train with locals players. By that time the Molndal, Sweden native is expected to have approval from Hockey Canada and the IIHF.

“Obviously we are excited to have the paperwork and travel arrangements for Robin complete and we feel it is just a formality on the approval process. As a player, and 2nd Round NHL draft pick, we are excited and know he has exceptional skills. It’s a privilege and honour that he has chosen to come to Sault Ste. Marie to adjust to the North American game and culture and to allow our coaching staff to help him reach his goal of being a pro player” commented Torrie.

Sting sign Francisco

Press Release

Sarnia, ON – Sarnia Sting Head Coach and General Manager Dave MacQueen announced today that the hockey club has signed forward Brandon Francisco to an OHL Contract and Education Package.

“Going into the draft our Scouting Staff was extremely high on Brandon, however we were made aware that he had several options and he would weigh out those options carefully before making a commitment. To draft a player of Brandon’s skill-level in the third round and have him commit to our hockey club is a major step as we continue to build the foundation of this organization brick by brick,” commented Dave MacQueen.

As a testament to the skill of Francisco, the ISS (International Scouting Service) ranked Brandon 17th overall in their final OHL Priority Draft Rankings and rated him as having “The Best Hands” of any draft eligible player. They compiled the following scouting report of him.

“Brandon is one of the most offensively dangerous players in the draft. Elite puck skills and speed on the rush. Is able to get the puck and transition to full speed instantly. His soft hands and quickness make him very difficult to defend against on the rush, allowing him to beat defenders to the outside at will. Has superb vision and natural hockey instincts. Very good anticipation without the puck, and gets into open spaces.” – ISS Player Profile – 2009 OHL Priority Draft

MacQueen adds, “A lot of credit goes to our entire staff and ownership group as we put a tremendous amount of time and effort into providing Brandon and his family with as much information as we possibly could to enable them to make the best decision they could. We are extremely pleased to have a commitment from Brandon and his family to the Sarnia Sting and the Ontario Hockey League. We feel Brandon is a pro-caliber player with a bright future in hockey. As well, in signing this agreement should he chose an alternate route he now has an Ontario Hockey League Scholarship available to him. We look forward to developing Brandon both as a hockey player and as an individual during his time with the Sarnia Sting.”

Last season with the York Simcoe Express, Francisco had one of the top offensive outputs of any draft eligible player scoring 57 goals and 50 assists for 107 points in 72 games played.

Francisco a native of Bradford, ON won’t be eligible for the NHL Draft until 2012 as he is a late birth date (born after September 14th).

Nachbaur heading to Binghamton

Sorry for the lack of updates this weekend, my internet was down

Press Release

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators announced today that the club has named Don Nachbaur as head coach of its American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.

Nachbaur has twice been named WHL coach of the year, first in 1994-95 when he led the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 42-28-2 record and again with Tri-City two seasons ago , when the club recorded a franchise record 108 regular-season points with a 52-16-2-2 record.

In 223 career NHL games, he scored 23 goals, added 46 assists and recorded 465 penalty minutes. He was Hartford’s third-round selection (60th overall) in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft.

Generals sign McDowell

Press Release

The Oshawa Generals have landed a defenceman that obviously believes the Ontario Hockey League is a perfect fit for him.

General Manager/Coach Chris DePiero announced on Wednesday that the club had come to terms with Jimmy McDowell, who played last season for the Detroit Little Caesars Under-16 team.

McDowell was the Generals 12th round draft pick in May’s OHL Priority Selection after turning in a strong season with the Little Caesars team. The promising young defenceman had a scholarship opportunity to go to Michigan State , so teams were leery about taking him with a high draft pick despite his strong potential.

But McDowell has decided to join the Generals and forgo Michigan State , as he’ll report to the Generals training camp next month.

“We’re absolutely delighted that Jimmy is joining our hockey club,” DePiero said. “He’s a promising young player with a lot of upside and we’re pleased he has decided to play in the OHL.

“This is a great coup for our organization. Jimmy’s family lives just 15 minutes from Michigan State , which has an excellent program, but he has opted to join us to pursue his hockey career. That speaks volumes about his commitment to making himself a better player, and says a lot about what the Generals and the OHL can offer a young player as well.”

McDowell is 6-feet, 165 pounds and a 1993 birthdate. DePiero says he will be given every chance to develop his game with the Generals as he learns to adjust to life in the OHL.

“We’ll make sure this is the best decision for Jimmy and his family and we’ll welcome him with open arms at training camp,” DePiero says.

The Generals are at work getting more players under contract for next season as they get set for the 2009-10 OHL season. The club has already come to terms with Boone Jenner, their first round pick, and Colin Sullentrop, their third round selection.
