4th Annual Showcase draws close

Press Release

The 4th Annual MJAHL Showcase is set to take place in Summerside this weekend at Credit Union Place and Scouts will have plenty of young talent to observe over the three day, eleven game event. Last year's event was also held in Summerside, drawing numerous scouts from all levels with many of those in attendance being from both NCAA and CIS programs.

And as the action unfolds on the ice over the weekend, League President Derryl Smith explains that in addition to putting the league's skaters on display, the league gains the opportunity to accomplish other tasks. "First, it's a great way for all of the teams to get to see each other very early in the year", says Smith. "As well, having the Showcase in this facility allows us to very easily and comfortably conduct league meetings on site. At the same time the weekend will be used as an opportunity to choose the MJAHL All-Star squad that will play exhibition games in Summerside leading up to the start of the World Junior A Challenge. Quite simply, the unique ability of this location to offer so many conveniences makes for an exciting weekend from an on-ice perspective while also allowing the league to complete some important work."

This year's Showcase offers no less in the way of skills to be put on display and by placing the event back at the beautiful Credit Union Place scouts, fans and players are again provided with the best experience that can be offered for a weekend of exciting MJAHL hockey. Even better for fans of Junior A Hockey is the fact that this year's event offers incredible value in the way of ticket pricing. Fans planning to take in the action will be offered day passes for all games on any given day for the ticket price of one regular Summerside Western Capitals game. In addition, holders of World Junior A tickets will be allowed to take in Showcase action free of charge.

"The idea behind these offerings is to maximize promotion of the MJAHL and Junior A hockey in this region", explains Event and Program Development Manager JP Desrosiers. "Through events like the Showcase and the World Junior A event, the City of Summerside is working to provide as much exposure for Junior A hockey in the Maritimes as possible."

Desrosiers, like Smith, also adds that the venue offers many conveniences for all who attend and feels that teams and scouts will enjoy an enhanced experience over last year's Showcase. "I feel we've definetely added some details that will be appreciated. One big additon over last year will see teams enjoy all of their post game meals at our recently opened buffet restaurant. Overall I think we have things set up so that the players, scouts and fans will feel appreciated."

Action begins on Friday at 2pm as Miramichi takes on the Lumberjacks, followed by a 4:30pm game between Truro and Dieppe. The main event for Friday night will see the Caps host the Mariners at 7:30pm. For tickets, call (902) 432-1234 or visit www.city.summerside.pe.ca

Couturier under contract until 2020

Press Release

BATHURST, Tuesday, September 29, 2009 - The Acadie-Bathurst Titan today announced that General Manager Sylvain Couturier has accepted a 10-year contract extension. Couturier, who was under contract until June 2010, will now be in place until June of 2020.

"We are privileged to have as General Manager one of the most knowledgeable and respected individuals in the QMJHL," mentioned team President Annie Morrissette. "Sylvain has an innate hockey sense and works very strategically and methodically. He’s put in place a strong scouting staff and has a vast contact network. That’s a credit to the individual because, over his professional attributes, Sylvain has a strong human approach. We consider ourselves fortunate to have him with us."

Titan Vice-President Stéphane Morrissette spoke along the same lines regarding the signing. "Having been with Sylvain during many meetings with the coaching staff, scouts or even in consultation with other General Managers, it’s easy to see that he has a strong expertise in the field and he is well-respected. These are two important qualities that a man in his position must have. The rest follows suit. All credit goes to him and he deserves to get what he’s received."

Couturier is content to be a part of the organization for the years to come. "I’m very happy. It’s a strong vote of confidence that Annie and Stéphane have given me. And, from a personal perspective, I’ve never hidden the fact that I feel at home here and it is here that I wanted to be. I had possibilities that could have been followed at the end of my contract, but this is where I wanted to be. I’m quite happy to have gotten this extension."

As the Titan’s General Manager (he also spent three years as Assistant Coach from 2002-03 to 2004-05), Sylvain Couturier already has a strong record. "If I look at my time as G.M., I’m proud of the fact we’ve never missed the playoffs. When I took the job in June of 2005, the team had just spent two years last in the overall standings, and in 2005-06 we came to within one game of participating in the memorial Cup tournament. In my first three seasons, the team averaged about 40 per season. For me, that is a good result."

Couturier is optimistic for what’s coming for the Titan. "Last season, things were more difficult as we had a very young club and rebuilding. What I like about this year’s team is that we’re still relatively young, the players are progressing well and we have a high number of picks in what is viewed as a strong draft next June. This bodes well for the future of this team."

The first player from this year’s Wildcats team to decide on a Division I school, Quick, 19, has a goal after four games to start the season.

“I'm really excited for him to get this opportunity."

And Quick is eager to get his final season of junior hockey in Wichita Falls off on the right foot.

“I'm looking forward to it,” he said. “We have a good young group of players that's pretty skilled. The guys we have returning from last year have great skills and bring some grit, too."
