Trevor Kidd to assist in Memorial Cup Rededication Ceremony

Press Release

Brandon, Manitoba – The Memorial Cup – originally donated to the Canadian Hockey League by the Ontario Hockey Association in 1919, in remembrance of the young Canadian men and women who died in service of their country during the First World War – will be officially rededicated to all fallen soldiers as part of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Brandon.

Its rededication, scheduled for Thursday, May 13th at CFB Shilo, will mark the unofficial kick-off to what will be a full week of co-operative festivities between the base and the Memorial Cup Championship.

A brand new museum gallery, dedicated to Manitoba’s historical military involvement is set to open that morning, with free entry for the duration of the 11-day championship.

Plans for the Cup’s rededication ceremony also includes an official fly-by from the Canadian Snowbirds demonstration team and a number of helicopter demonstrations as well as participation from members of both the Army and Navy. In addition, a former member of the Western Hockey League’s Wheat Kings and a Memorial Cup winner as a member of the Spokane Chiefs, Trevor Kidd will be on hand to represent the players on all four participating teams.

Following the rededication, the Memorial Cup will be delivered along Veterans Way to Brandon by an armoured vehicle convoy. An interactive military display will also be set up within the Subway Memorial Cup Village at the Keystone Centre.

A native of Dugald Manitoba, Kidd joined the Wheat Kings in 1988 as a 16-year old goalkeeper and in addition to being chosen WHL Goaltender of the Year in 1990, he helped the Spokane Chiefs capture the MasterCard Memorial Cup in 1991.

A former first round draft choice of the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames, Kidd played eleven seasons in the NHL, playing a total of 387 career games and compiling an impressive 2.83 goals against average and 19 shutouts.

As a Wheat King, Kidd played in 125 games, compiling a goals against average of 4.10 and two shutouts.

Kidd is one of several ex-Wheat Kings expected to be back in Brandon for the 11-day festivities next month.
