Attack’s Garrett Wilson Named OHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Owen Sound Attack captain Garrett Wilson is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 17. The forward scored a league-high seven goals and added an assist for eight points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-7.

Wilson led the Attack to three straight wins this week and was named first star in all three contests extending the club’s winning-streak to eight games. He began the week by scoring his first hat-trick of the season including a shorthanded marker as part of a 6-2 win on the road against the Barrie Colts on Thursday night. On Friday night he scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner to beat Midwest Division rivals the Kitchener Rangers 6-3. His week ended at home on Saturday with another win over the Colts, this time by a score of 7-5. He scored two goals including a shorthanded tally before scoring the game-winner on the power play for his league-leading 12th goal of the season.

Wilson, a 19-year-old from Elmvale, ON, is playing in his fourth OHL season and third full year with the Attack. Selected in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers, Wilson has 17 points in nine games so far this season.

Honourable mention this week goes to Ryan Strome of the Niagara IceDogs who scored three goals and five assists for eight points in three games. His week included his first career hat-trick as part of a four-point game last Wednesday as first star in a 5-4 win over the Belleville Bulls. The Bulls’ Richard Panik was also considered after scoring five goals and two assists for seven points in three games. Panik also recorded his first career hat-trick as first star in a 3-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday. In goal, Petr Mrazek of the Ottawa 67’s made 103 saves in three games with a 2-1-0-0 record while posting a goals-against-average of 2.35 and save percentage of .936.
