Attack to Honor Maltby on February 19th

The Owen Sound Attack is pleased to announce that on Saturday, February 19th, 2011, they will be honoring former Owen Sound Platers Captain Kirk Maltby in a pre-game ceremony that will see a banner raised to the rafters in the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

Maltby, a Cambridge, ON. native played three seasons for the Owen Sound Platers from 1989-1992. During those three seasons in Owen Sound, Maltby scored 96 times while adding 88 assists for 184 points in 191 games played. After scoring 50 goals in the 1992/1992 season, Maltby was selected in the 3rd round (65th overall) by the Edmonton Oilers. Maltby played parts of three seasons with the Oilers before joining Detroit during the 1995/1996 season, a move that would change Maltby’s career.

During his fourteen seasons in Detroit, Maltby played in 908 regular season games, accumulating 107 goals, 115 assists to go along with 618 Penalty Minutes. Maltby played his 1000th career NHL Regular Season game (played 164 with Edmonton) on February 27th, 2009 vs. the Los Angeles Kings. His best statistical season was 2002–03, when he set career highs in goals (14), assists (23), points (37), and penalty minutes (91).

Maltby’s most notorious achievements occurred with the Detroit Red Wings where he won four Stanley Cups during the 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008 playoffs. In 169 Playoff contests, Maltby scored 16 times while adding 15 assists to go along with 149 PIMS.

On October 12, 2010, Maltby officially announced his retirement from the NHL. The same day he also announced he will take a job as a pro scout with the Detroit Red Wings.

Kirk now resides in the Grosse Pointe, Michigan area during the season and splits his off-season between his Michigan home and Hespeler, Ontario residence. He and his wife Wendy have a daughter named Ella, born March 22, 2004 and fraternal twins: son Landon and daughter Leighton, born July 17, 2008.

The Attack will be hosting the Oshawa Generals on February 19th with game time at 7:30pm with Maltby and his family present.
