Male Top 80 Selected for Summer Camp

Press Release

The Sask First Bantam Program is open annually to all second year Bantam players, in the province. They are all invited to a zone camp where they are given a fair and equal opportunity to continue in the program. At the initial zone camp, a team of twenty will be chosen to represent their zone each March where the eight zone teams compete. Following this tournament, forty of the top players (twenty four forwards, twelve defenseman and two goaltenders) are invited to a summer camp where they will undergo technical, physical and mental preparation.

At the summer camp these forty players will join forty players who were selected from the previous years program. The summer camp will consist of forty players who have just completed their second year of Bantam and forty who have just completed their first year of Midget hockey. The players who would be 16 year olds in the upcoming hockey season would be the age category where the bulk of the players would be taken from to participate in the Hockey Canada National High Performance Program operating in that year. The forty players in the older group may or may not be completely the same group which attended the summer camp the previous year. The SHA utilizes the evaluation network within the SMAAAHL/SJHL/WHL to determine the forty players who will attend following their first year of Midget eligibility.

The SHA operates its High Performance or Sask First Programs, according to a cyclical arrangement as outlined by Hockey Canada. Every four years Hockey Canada encourages Provinces to participate in the Canada Winter Games, a Under 17 Competition. In Non-Canada Games years, Hockey Canada sponsors the World Under 17 Challenge where Saskatchewan join's forces with Manitoba to create Team Western.

The Top 40 - 1995 and Top 40 - 1996 have been finalized for Sask First Summer Camp in Wilcox July 18-22.
