Mooseheads name Steve Hartley Assistant Coach

Press Release

The Halifax Mooseheads and head coach Dominique Ducharme announced today the official signing of Steve Hartley as Assistant Coach to a 2-year contract.

Hartley, 25, has been the head coach of the Joliette Traffic of the Quebec Jr AAA League for the past two seasons leading them to a 55-36-9 record, including a 31-13-5 record this season eventually losing in the league semi-finals. Prior to that, Hartley coached the Atlanta Junior Knights, leading them to appearances in the National Championship in both his seasons behind the bench.

"I would like to thank the Mooseheads for this tremendous opportunity and am very excited to join such a prestigious organization” said Hartley, who will relocate to Halifax next month. “I look forward to broadening my experience while helping this Club move towards their goal of sustained success both on the ice and in the community."

Hartley, a native of Hawkesbury Ontario, is the son of former NHL head coach Bob Hartley. He played goal for 2 seasons with NCAA’s Miami University (Ohio) Division 1 before finishing his career in Joliette, on a team coached by Ducharme.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with Dominique again. Having played for him, I have seen his passion for winning firsthand and I’m confident he will instil that mentality and sense of commitment in our players”, stated Hartley.

Ducharme, who is in the process of moving his family to Halifax, said he is glad to have been able to secure Hartley to join him in Halifax.

“I am really happy to see Steve joining our staff, stated Ducharme. “His knowledge of the game, his commitment to success and his capacity to analyze and bring solutions to our game will make him an important asset for the Mooseheads.”

Next up for the Mooseheads will be the 2011 QMJHL Entry Draft June 4th in Victoriaville. The Mooseheads will select 4th overall and are one of just two teams with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds.
