Senators sign forward Jakob Silfverberg to an entry-level contract

Press Release

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has signed forward Jakob Silfverberg to a three-year entry-level contract. Silfverberg recently concluded 2010-11 play by helping Team Sweden earn a silver medal at the 2011 IIHF World Championship in Slovakia.

A native of Gavle, Sweden, Silfverberg has spent the last three seasons with Brynas of the Swedish Elite League (SEL), with whom he set professional career highs in 2010-11 in goals (18), assists (16), points (34) and games played (53). He ranked first among all Brynas players in goals and was third in overall team scoring this season. He also concluded the 2011 post-season ranked second (tie) on his team with four playoff points (four assists) as Brynas was eliminated by eventual champion Farjestads in five games.

Silfverberg, 20, was the Senators’ first of two second-round picks (39th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In 117 career SEL contests, he has registered 54 points (29 goals, 25 assists) while amassing 22 penalty minutes.

In addition to playing for Sweden at the 2011 World Championship, Silfverberg has also represented his country at each of the last three World Junior Hockey Championships, winning a silver medal in 2009 in Ottawa and a bronze medal in 2010 in Saskatoon.
