MJHLers inducted into MB Hall of Fame

A number of former MJHLers will be inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame on Oct. 1 at Canad Inns, Polo Park, Winnipeg.

Fans interested in attending are encouraged to order their tickets soon.

Entering from the MJHL are Neil Wilkinson, a former member of the Selkirk Steelers who went on to play in the NHL. Also entering the Hall will be Karl Friesen, who starred in goal for the West Kildonan North Stars. Ted Foreman, a long-time board member of the Winnipeg (South/Fort Garry) Blues will be inducted into the builders’ category.

Tickets will cost $110 with tables of 10 available for $1,000. A $65 charitable receipt is included with each ticket. Other playerss entering the Hall are forwards Mike Keane, who won three Stanley Cups and then captained the Manitoba Moose for five seasons; Theo Fleury, who scored 455 NHL goals; defensemen Terry Ball, a veteran of both the NHL and WHA; Flin Flon's George Konik who played for the US National team; and Jayson More and Wilkinson who both played in more than 400 NHL contests. Friesen, who would later play for Germany in three Olympics and six world championships.



Three builders are from Westman. They are former Brandon Wheat King owner Bob Cornell, Brandon's Glen Lawson who coached championship teams at the bantam, juvenile and intermediate levels and who also was behind the bench for the Wheat Kings on three different occasions, and Don Dietrich, a former player who has coached and been in Hockey Canada's mentorship program in Deloraine for many years. Also going in as a builder is Winnipegger Ted Foreman, a long-time board member of the Winnipeg South (Fort Garry) Blues and Winnipeg Jets director. Also joining the Hall are two officials, Laura (Vanderhorst) Loeppky and Bud Ulrich, and broadcasters Curt Keilback and Bob Picken.

Teams being honoured are the 1955-56 Winnipeg Warriors who won the Western Hockey League championship and then downed the Montreal Royals to take the Edinburgh Trophy as Canadian minor league champions; two Canadian intermediate champs and Hardy Cup winners, the 1974 Warroad Lakers and the 1983 North End Flyers, and the 1994, 1995 and 1996 Warroad Lakers, triple winners of the Allan Cup and the Canadian senior crown
