Winterhawks Sign Layne Viveiros

Press Release

The Winterhawks have signed 16-year-old defenseman Layne Viveiros, the team’s ninth round pick, 196th overall, in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.

Viveiros played last season in Austria, where he had three goals and four assists for seven points in 11 games with Klagenfurter AC in the Austrian Under-20 league.

“We were impressed with Layne’s play during training camp, and feel he has a bright future in our league,” said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “He is a smart, puck-moving defenseman and will fit in well with our group.”

Viveiros is the son of former WHL and NHL defenseman Emanuel Viveiros. The elder Viveiros played for the Prince Albert Raiders from 1982-1986, then played 29 games for the Minnesota North Stars from 1985-1988 before embarking on a lengthy career in Europe.
