Phillips commits to Michigan Tech

Powell River, BC– December 23, 2011 - The Kings are proud to announce that Jamie Phillips has committed to Michigan Tech University. Jamie will be attending Michigan Tech in September of 2012.

Hailing from Caledonia, Ontario, Phillips joined the green and gold at the beginning of this current season after winning the RBC Cup with the Pembroke Lumber Kings last season. Wearing number 31, Phillips immediately made an impression between the pipes and quickly rose to the top of the BCHL goaltending stats. In 24 games, Jamie leads the league with 4 shut-outs and holds a saving percentage of 0.917%.

Kings' head coach and general manager Kent Lewis is proud of Phillips saying, "When Jamie arrived in Powell River in September, we had high expectations. He’s lived up to them. Jamie’s strengths are his character, his focus and athleticism. Michigan Tech is an excellent school academically and has a great hockey program. We are very proud of Jamie for this great achievement.”

Phillips says he chose Michigan Tech for a number of reasons. “Michigan Tech’s coaching staff and players impressed me. The coaching staff has a clear direction of where they see the team heading and they have designed the program with a mission to step up to being one of the best in the US,” Jamie notes. “Michigan Tech also offers a great small campus with small class sizes and has high educational standards. There is a high success rate for students in my program to be accepted into medical school afterwards.”

Jamie will be pursuing a degree in Exercise Science with a goal of one day being accepted into med school and becoming a doctor.

Phillips believes that being a Powell River King was key to attaining a scholarship to this respected NCAA university. “I believe that the BCHL is the best Junior ‘A’ league in Canada with the best exposure to NCAA schools. When you’re on a winning team like the Kings and your coaching staff is constantly in touch with schools and scouts are at most of the games, it’s simply a matter of playing well personally so you can reach that goal. Everything else is laid out for you.”
