Cataractes win Tie-Break over Oil Kings

Press Release

SHAWINIGAN, Thursday, May 24, 2012 – The Shawinigan Cataractes scored six unanswered goals on their way to a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings and earning a berth in the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup semi-final.

The Cataractes were the first to open the scoring at 7:30 on a Yannick Veilleux goal, his first of the tournament. Parked in front of the net, he deflected a Brandon Gormley slap shot past goaltender Laurent Brossoit.

Morgan Ellis gave a two-goal lead to the hometown favourites on the power-play after one-timing a shot from the right faceoff circle. Brandon Gormley recorded his second assist on the play.

Shawinigan took a 3-0 lead at 2:54 of the second period. Anton Zlobin was the recipient of a drop pass from Michael Chaput. He then slapped a shot behind Brossoit who was screened on the play.

It took very little time for the Cataractes offence to strike again. Kirill Kabanov recorded his first goal of the tournament a minute later. He let go a shot off the glass that hit the back of the Edmonton goaltender before going in.

The floodgates opened again at 8:11 as the Cataractes took a commanding 5-0 lead courtesy of a Michael Bournival goal on the power-play. Pierre-Olivier Morin added a shorthanded goal before the Oil Kings struck with their first marker at 16:50. Henrik Samuelsson broke away towards the opposing net before making a nifty move and beating Gabriel Girard.

Although there were a few scoring chances in the third period, the game ended with a 6-1 score.

Brandon Gormley was named the game’s first star. He registered two points and a +4 rating.

The semi-final game of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup goes tomorrow as the Shawinigan Cataractes battle the Saint John Sea Dogs live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports starting at 7 pm ET.
