Bulls forward Carlisle makes NCAA Division I commitment

Press Release

The Amarillo Bulls of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) have developed quite a pipeline for sending players on to the Army hockey program.

That great tradition continues today (Wednesday) as forward Clint Carlisle becomes the fourth member of the Amarillo Bulls to commit to Army (NCAA Division I – Atlantic Hockey), joining Garrett Peterson who announced his intentions earlier this season, and Joe Kozlak and Luke Jenkins who are already at West Point. Carlisle, who is working through the application process, becomes the 11th member of the Bulls this year to announce his NCAA plans.

“Kozy (Joe Kozlak) and (Luke) Jenkins went there and really showed Army that the Amarillo Bulls come from great coaching,” Carlisle said. “Dennis Williams is one of the best coaches for getting his guys prepared for the next level. I hope to live up to the expectations, and go there and have a great four years.”

Carlisle, a 6-0 180 pound forward, has just returned to the Bulls line-up after missing three months due to a lower body injury. The Trophy Club, Texas native has eight goals and three assists for 11 points in 14 games. He hasn’t missed a beat since returning to the line-up with two goals in his first five games back, while providing leadership up front. In the 2011-2012 campaign, Carlisle had 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points and was plus 26. Four of his 10 goals last season were game winners.

“Being injured was really a hard three months,” he said. “But now, getting back and getting the weight off my shoulders (making the NCAA Commitment) feels great. I can go out now and worry about winning a Robertson Cup.”

Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said Clint was a ‘diamond in the rough’ due to the injury but he knew what the young man’s capabilities were and what he could bring a Division I program like Army.  “He was able to persevere and keep positive during the time he was out,” Williams said. “I think it shows a lot about his character, and something that a school like Army thrives on those players that stay positive, work hard and commits to what it means to get back healthy.”

Williams said that the transition of going to Army will be an easier one with guys like Garrett Peterson, Joe Kozlak and Luke Jenkins.  “Outside of TJ Sarcona, Clint was our second leading goal scorer returning,” he said. “He will be part of our team’s success hopefully down the stretch. He works hard and persevered through the injury and is one more good hockey player and person that gets to move on and play NCAA hockey.”

Carlisle said he hopes he and fellow Texan Garrett Peterson can boost the Dallas hockey scene even more with their NCAA announcements.  “It means a lot to me and anything that I can do to help the Dallas area is great,” he added. “It’s truly been growing as a hockey area. It’s great to see Garrett (Peterson) and myself going on to Army and boosting that area even more.”

Clint Carlisle joins defenseman Geoff Fortman (Canisius College), John Rey (Robert Morris), Garret Peterson (Army), Tyler Deresky (Bentley University), Hampus Gustafsson (Merrimack College), TJ Sarcona (Niagara), Tyler Rostenkowski (Air Force), Kyle Plageman (Army), and Joe Grabowski (Princeton), Ryan Cole (Trinity College), as Amarillo Bulls to announce their NCAA Commitments.

CREEL COMMITS TO WEST POINT

Press Release

Wayne, NJ- The Jersey Hitmen are proud to announce that rookie goaltender, Tanner Creel, has committed to attend West Point (United States Military Academy) in the fall of 2013. A native of Deer Park, Illinois, Creel played his midget hockey for Team Illinois in the High Performance League.

"I saw Tanner for the first time at our tryout camp last April," commented coach Harris. "We exchanged emails early in the recruiting process then Tanner came out to camp. The camp was full of excellent goaltenders (including fellow netminder Kollyn Jones) but we knew Creel had something special. On top of that he was a great student and came from a tremendous family. We knew he was a division one goaltender, so we offered him on the spot!"

Since signing with the Hitmen in April, Creel has gone on and performed magnificently for the Hitmen posting an overall record of 12-2 (including three shut-outs) and within the EJHL has posted a 2.23 goals against average and .915 save percentage.

Harris continued on Creel, "With Jack Riley (West Point head coach, Brian Riley's son) on our team our guys get seen a lot by West Point. In the past we sent defenseman Billy Day (West Point '12), goaltender AJ Drago (West Point '11) and most recently RJ Burns (West Point '16) to the Academy so we have a pretty stellar record and pipeline with the young men that we have sent to Brian. This season is no different as Creel joins Connor Costello, who committed 2 weeks ago to West Point. I am so happy for both players and know that both Creel and Costello will shine under coach Riley and Ward.

"One of the most regimented and hardworking players on and off ice in Hitmen history," said coach Harris, Creel seems to be a natural for West Point.

"I am very excited at the opportunity to go to West Point and play division one hockey," commented Tanner Creel. "I am so happy at the opportunity that the Hitmen gave me as a rookie in the EJHL. I cannot thank coach Harris and coach Hunt enough for exposing me to all the eastern division one schools. For developing me, both on and off the ice, and for marketing me off the ice. Playing in New Jersey has been a tremendous experience. I also have to thank our goalie coach Ryan Honick, for all the time and effort that he has put into my game, he has helped me grow a lot this season but none of this would have been attainable without the help and support from my family. This is for them as much as it is for me, and I would not have been able to get to West Point without them, Thank you so much!"

Creel becomes the Hitmen's 18th division one commitment.

Bulls defenseman Fortman makes NCAA DI commitment

Press Release

The path to getting an NCAA College Commitment can be a road full of peaks and valleys for a young hockey player, but if they stay the course and continue to work hard they know good things will happen.

That was the case for Amarillo Bulls defenseman Geoff Fortman who announced his NCAA College Commitment to Canisius College, an NCAA Division I school located in Buffalo, NY that plays out of Atlantic Hockey. The young defenseman becomes the 10th Bulls player to announce his NCAA plans.
Fortman said the hardest part was watching other players get spoken to by NCAA Scouts, and waiting for your turn to get noticed.

“It’s hard when you have a great game and you know scouts were there,” Fortman said. “You’re looking forward to talking to scouts and none of them come up to you. It’s tough and you wonder is someone going to say anything or notice you. I know every hockey player goes through it at times, but I finally got to that point. I owe most of the credit for sure to Coach (Dennis) Williams and Coach (Rocky) Russo for all of the hard work they have done on my behalf. This year has started to pay off, and I really excited about this opportunity.”

Fortman, who hails from Crystal Lake Illinois, is having another excellent year for the Bulls with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 39 games. He is plus 21 and has two power play goals. The 6-2, 210 pound defenseman and an Assistant Captain followed up a terrific rookie year in the Texas Panhandle where he had 12 points in 52 games was third among NAHL players with a plus minus rating of plus 45.
Fortman, who will join former Amarillo Bulls forward Cody Freeman who is into his second full season with the Golden Griffins, said the two talked by phone about the school.

“Cody said it was a small school and a real tight-knit community and personal with the professors,” Fortman explained. “He said if you are looking for a bigger school this may not be the place, but I told him I have been looking for a smaller school from the start, and it really felt like the fit for me.”

Amarillo Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said he is thrilled to see Geoff get this opportunity and is impressed by his calming demeanor on the ice. “Geoff isn’t afraid to mix it up on the ice and stand up for his teammates,” Williams said. “He is so steady on the back end and defends with the best of them. I haven’t seen too many guys in this league let alone the South Division that is a better stay at home type defenseman than he is. From his rookie campaign last year to now, he has made huge strides.”

Williams said the Canisius coaching staff of Dave Smith and BJ Adams is going to be happy with what Geoff brings to the team. “He will listen to what the Head Coaches and the Assistants have to say, but is also the type of guy that when you leave that locker room and some of the players brush off what the coaches have to say that he will make sure they are all on the same page,” he said.

Geoff Fortman joins John Rey (Robert Morris), Garret Peterson (Army), Tyler Deresky (Bentley University), Hampus Gustafsson (Merrimack College), TJ Sarcona (Niagara), Tyler Rostenkowski (Air Force), Kyle Plageman (Army), and Joe Grabowski (Princeton), Ryan Cole (Trinity College), as Amarillo Bulls to announce their NCAA Commitments.
