Press Release

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats announced today the hockey club will partner with Seeking Smiles to support the 2nd Annual “Teddy Bear Tea” to benefit children at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre.  The Tea will be held Saturday, November 30th from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Blue Lounge at Hotel Saskatchewan and features a silent auction.

Attendees to the Teddy Bear Tea, fashioned after its namesake in Boston, dress up to enjoy an afternoon of conversation and lunching at Hotel Saskatchewan.  Last year’s Teddy Bear Tea raised over $6,500.

“The Regina Pats are excited to have the opportunity to partner with Seeking Smiles.  As an organization this fits with our commitment to community, especially considering our ongoing work with the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre,” explained Regina Pats Senior VP and General Manager Chad Lang.  “We believe it’s a perfect fit to not only generate awareness and funds for the WRC, which is a critical service provider for our community, but to also support a foundation chaired by the daughter of one of our alumni.”

The Seeking Smiles charity was formed in 2011 by Michaela Markwart, the daughter of former Pats player Nevin Markwart, focused on providing resources to, and increasing the awareness of the children’s area at Wascana Rehabilitation Hospital in Regina.

“It’s wonderful to have the Regina Pats joining us to support the Teddy Bear Tea,” commented Michaela Markwart.  “It’s great partnering up with the team my dad played for here in Regina and I’m looking forward to working with the Pats to support the children at WRC and raise the profile of Seeking Smiles.”

Lawrence to Quinnipiac

Press Release

Marlboro, MA- Bruins USPHL goalie Sean Lawrence has accepted a scholarship to Quinnipiac for the fall of 2014. Lawrence is having an unbelievable season as the leader of a stingy Bruins defensive unit allowing less than 2 goals a game.

In 24 games and starts Lawrence has posted an 18-4-2 record with a 1.88GAA and a .940 save percentage, both bests in the Premier division. Sean has been nothing but consistent since coming to the Bruins organization at the start of the 2012-13 season. In his first year he led the Bruins to a first place finish in the North and is doing the same again this year in the USPHL.

USPHL Premier head coach and general manager Peter Masters knows better than anyone how valuable Sean has been to his team’s success and how prepared he is to be a great player at the college level, “Sean is one of the top handful of goalies to ever come thru our program. We would not be in the position we are today without him and our coaches and his teammates could not be happier for Sean on his decision to attend Quinnipiac. He has tremendous desire and work ethic and is going to be great at the college level”.

Like Lawrence, Quinnipiac is no stranger to success of late. They are following up a season in which they made an appearance in the National title game with a 12-2-2 start, 6-1-1 in the ECAC which is tops in the conference. Sean will arrive on campus next fall. In the meantime the focus will remain on guiding his Junior Bruins team thru the second half schedule and into the playoffs in search of the inaugural USPHL Premier Championship.

The Bruins and the entire USPHL would like to congratulate Sean and his family.

Madison Capitols begin New Era in USHL

Press Release

During a press conference on Tuesday, the management of Madtown Hockey, LLC announced the new USHL Member Club will be known as the “Madison Capitols” when it begins play during the 2014-15 season.  The Capitols also welcomed two new members to their ownership group – Ryan Suter, defenseman for the Minnesota Wild, and Tom Sagissor, former Wisconsin Badgers player.

The Capitols name is a nod to the original USHL team that competed in the city for 11 seasons, first known as the Madison Capitols (1984-91) and then the Wisconsin Capitols (1991-95). It has lived on with the Madison Capitols AAA youth hockey program to continues to play today at the Capitol Ice Arena, site of Tuesday’s press event.

Suter and Sagissor join the ownership group that includes Brian Schoenborn, Jeff Krol, Charles Bidwill III, Saul Trieman, and Tom Garrity. The Madison Capitols will hire a full-time business and hockey staff, along with securing players in the coming months.  The new USHL team will play its home games at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

Suter is in his ninth NHL season and second overall with the Minnesota Wild.  He was selected in the first round (7th overall) of the 2003 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators and spent seven seasons with the club prior to signing with the Wild in the summer of 2012.  He is a native of Madison and spent a year playing college hockey at the University of Wisconsin (2003-04) prior to beginning his pro career.  He played junior hockey for the National Team Development Program for two seasons (2001-03) prior to it becoming a member of the USHL.

“I am so excited about the USHL playing in Madison where I have so many friends, memories, and deep hockey roots,” said Suter.  “This is a new and unique opportunity for me to be an owner and investor, and I believe in the product and the great staff that is being assembled.  I look forward to the first game and the support of the great hockey fans in the Madison area.”

Ryan is part of Suter family that has deep bloodlines in the game hockey as his father, Bob Suter, played at the University of Wisconsin and won a NCAA Championship in 1977.  Bob was also a member of the legendary 1980 United States team that won gold at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, a run that was dubbed the “Miracle on Ice”.  Ryan’s uncle, Gary Suter, played in the USHL for two seasons (1981-83) with the original Dubuque Fighting Saints.  He went on to also play at the University of Wisconsin before embarking on a 17-year NHL career that included winning the Stanley Cup.

Sagissor is a former Badger hockey standout who was a member of the 1990 NCAA Championship team and also went on to play professionally with the Montreal Canadiens organization.  He is now a successful Divisional Director for RBC Wealth Management Group in Minnesota.  He was a fifth-round of the Canadiens in the 1985 NHL Draft after a stellar high school career at Hastings (MN) High School. Sagissor is currently Director of Hockey in the Stillwater (MN) Youth Hockey Association and serves on the Board of Directors for “Defending the Blue Line”, a non-profit organization assisting military families in need. Sagissor is still an active member in the University of Wisconsin “W” Club that raises funds for Badger Athletics.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime to bring a USHL club to a great hockey community like Madison,” said Sagissor.  “I know the fans in this area will love to watch the development of these players over time. We wanted to keep the great tradition with the name Madison Capitols as it means so much to the history of hockey in this marketplace.  I cannot wait for the team to drop the puck next fall.”

Tom Garrity officially introduced the new members of the Madison Capitols ownership, as well as formally introducing Steve Miller, who last month was named the team’s head coach and general manager, and Ed Chamberlain, who will serve as President for Madtown Hockey and the Capitols.

“Today is a wonderful day for hockey in Madison, Wisconsin,” said Garrity a native of Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin and a University of Wisconsin-Platteville graduate.  “This area has always supported hockey at all levels.  Fans will enjoy the USHL and its style of play.  Our ownership group has a strong desire and goal to give fans a winning product on the ice and a total entertainment experience from start to finish.  At the same time, we are proud to continue with the Madison Capitols name as it has a rich hockey tradition and significance in this area.  We will also be active community participants to help grow the game of hockey at all levels.”

As the managing partner of Madtown Hockey, LLC, Garrity brings a wealth of experience in the USHL, professional sports, and collegiate athletics.  He has worked for several high profile professional sports organizations and leagues at a senior level.  Garrity is the founder and CEO of Quan Sports Marketing in Stillwater, Minnesota and also President/CEO of the Sioux Falls Sports, LLC, which owns and operates the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede and the Sioux Falls Canaries of the Northern League Baseball.

“We’re excited to bring the USHL to one of the Midwest’s greatest cities and hockey communities,” said USHL President and Commissioner Skip Prince.  “Madison’s ownership and senior management have already proven themselves to be innovative, focused, and committed to making ‘Hockey Night’ at the Alliant Energy Center a must-see event.  We’re counting down the days until a team with the Wisconsin state capital’s name on their sweater hits the home ice.  This will be special.”

During its first era in the USHL, the Madison Capitols won over 200 games in its 11 seasons.  A total of 12 USHL players who played in Madison would go on to be selected in the NHL Draft, in addition to numerous players that would earn NCAA Division I opportunities.  Former NHL defenseman Brian Rafalski spent the 1990-91 season in the USHL with the Madison Capitols before staying in town to play collegiately at the University of Wisconsin.  He would then embark on an 11-year NHL career that included winning three Stanley Cups, the most by any USHL alum.  Derek Plante was part of the Madison team for the 1988-89 season and would become the second-ever USHL alum to win the Stanley Cup when he did so in 1999 with the Dallas Stars.

Several former Madison players have gone on to successful coaching careers, including current Team USA head coach Don Granato who also had a coaching stint with the team during the 1993-94 season.  Mark Osiecki played with the Capitols in 1986-87 before his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin.  He would return to the USHL as head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers (1997-2004).  Mike Corbett played two USHL seasons in Madison (1990-92), and after spending the last decade on the coaching staff at the Air Force Academy, he is in his first season as head coach at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

Additional announcements will be made in the coming weeks, including the unveil of an official logo, team colors, and uniforms.  The team has launched several media platforms, including a website, www.MapCapsHockey.com, a Facebook page, www.facebook.com/MadCapsHockey, and a Twitter account, www.twitter.com/MadCapsHockey

Bulls tender forward Jesse MacIntyre

Press Release

The Amarillo Bulls success at winning hockey games and moving players on to the NCAA are what attracted forward Jesse MacIntyre to the organization.

The Bulls announced today that they have tendered MacIntyre, a native of Waterford, Michigan, for the 2014-15 season. MacIntyre is currently playing for the Philly Little Flyers of the Eastern Hockey League, coached by former Bulls' Assistant Coach Rocky Russo. The speedy forward leads the team in goals with 11 and second on the team in points with 17.

“The Bulls are the top team that I wanted to come to and I feel honored to be able to have the opportunity to join such a great organization,” MacIntyre said. “I know the Bulls have had a lot of success the past three years and moving players on to the NCAA. That’s the reason why I picked the Bulls. I am ready to give them all I have and help them win another Robertson Cup.”

Amarillo Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said the organization is excited to lock up the first tender with MacIntyre.

“He’s having a great year for the Philly Little Flyers and after talking to Coach Russo about him, made it an easy decision for us,” said Williams. “We had Jesse on our radar last year when he played for Honeybaked (Under 18 team) with Mitchell Vanderburgh. To see the strides he made over the summer and the season he is having now is fantastic.

“I had a great conversation with Jesse and his Mom and Dad, and they are as excited, as we are, to be part of the Amarillo Bulls for next season.”

Williams said MacIntyre will continue to work hard during the season and be ready to join the Bulls next year.

“We are fortunate to recruit high end prospects like Jesse,” he said. “He made it clear that he wants to come here and be a Division I hockey player. We’re going to do all we can to prepare him for the next level.

“Jesse won’t be satisfied to just sign a tender now, but wants to continue to work hard and be a leader in Philadelphia.  Next year, when he shows up to training camp he’ll be ready to go and compete for our hockey team.”

MacIntyre said he understands that he needs to get stronger with his game.

“My quickness is there and the coaches here are confident that I can play in the NAHL,” he said. “The coaches have been pushing me really hard in the weight room and making my game even stronger.  My line mate Oleg Potemkin is giving me some advice of what I have to work on for the next level.”

Little Flyers Head Coach Rocky Russo said MacIntyre will fit well with the Bulls and their system.

“He’s a very hard working two-way forward who plays well in the defensive zone,” said Russo. “He skates very well and currently leads our team in goal scoring. He’s got a nose for the net and a quick release. When I had the opportunity to bring Jesse to Philadelphia and get his feet wet at the junior hockey level, I jumped at it right away. Jesse came in ready since day one and is one of our top players.”

Defenceman Duda leaves the North Bay

Press Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. – The North Bay Battalion’s defence corps was reduced by one Monday when Steven Duda informed the team that he is quitting hockey.

“He decided to pursue other options than hockey,” said Stan Butler, the Ontario Hockey League club’s director of hockey operations and head coach. “He’s going to go home and sort out his school options.”

Duda, a 19-year-old resident of Warrington, Pa., was signed as a free agent Sept. 19 after playing 52 games last season with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He scored one goal and earned three assists in 23 games with the Troops.

“Steven did everything we asked of him as a player,” said Butler. “Sometimes a player just gets to the point where he decides his heart isn’t in it.”

The Battalion defence brigade now numbers six, including Kyle Wood, who has yet to play this season after knee surgery, and Miles Liberati, acquired in a trade with the London Knights last Tuesday. In addition, Shawn Tessier of the junior A North Bay Trappers has played seven games with the Troops, and left winger Connor Jarvis has been deployed on the blue line for 14 of his 22 games.

“We have five active defencemen here, and Woody’s coming back in a few weeks,” said Butler. “We’ll have Tessier here working with us today. And we can use Jarvis on defence as needed.”

The other rearguards are Dylan Blujus, who sat out the first 12 games of the season after knee surgery, Marcus McIvor, Brenden Miller and rookie Riley Bruce.

“He’s a skilled puck-moving defenceman who, as he gets more confidence, will only do better,” Butler said of the 18-year-old Liberati, who saw solid minutes in a 2-1 victory via shootout Saturday night over the host Barrie Colts after being acquired for overage blueliner Zach Bell and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection.

“That was the most minutes he’s played all year. He’ll be a very good player for us, and that’s not to take anything away from Bell. He’s been good for them, too. That was a good trade, one that was good for both teams.”

The Battalion also added Ben Thomson via trade last week, with a fourth-round pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection from the Kitchener Rangers for fellow left winger Brandon Robinson.
