Winquist Denny's WHL player of the week

The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips’ forward Josh Winquist is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 24, 2013.

Winquist recorded four goals and four assists for eight points along with a +3 rating over four games in the past week, leading the Silvertips to a 4-0 record on the road in that span.  It’s the second Denny’s WHL Player of the Week award for Winquist this season.

On Tuesday, November 19th, Winquist scored his 18th goal of the season to help the Silvertips to a 3-2 win over the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, BC.  On Wednesday, November 20th, he recorded three assists with a +2 rating while being named the game’s 1st Star in a 3-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.  On Friday, November 22nd, Winquist scored twice and added an assist while earning 1st Star honors in a 4-3 victory over the Central Division-leading Medicine Hat Tigers.  On Saturday, Winquist tallied the game’s only goal and was named the 3rd Star in a 1-0 shutout victory over the Hitmen in Calgary, AB.

Winquist, a 20-year-old from St. Albert, AB, is in his fifth and final season in the WHL with the Everett Silvertips.  The 6’0”, 180-lb left wing currently leads the Silvertips and ranks third in the WHL in scoring with 21 goals and 48 points in 27 games.  A third-round pick, 66th overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, Winquist has played 261 career games for the Silvertips, recording 75 goals and 171 points.

The WHL has also nominated Patrik Polivka of the Victoria Royals for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award.  The 19-year-old from Plzen, Czech Republic, posted a perfect 4-0 record with a shutout over four appearances in the past week, allowing just three goals on 131 shots for a 0.75 goals-against average and a .977 save percentage in that span.  On Tuesday, November 19th, Polivka turned aside 42 of 43 shots he faced and was the game’s 1st Star in a 2-1 victory over the Blazers in Kamloops.  On Wednesday, November 20th, Polivka stopped 26 of 27 shots and took 1st Star honors in a 4-1 victory over the B.C. Division-leading Kelowna Rockets.  On Friday, November 22nd, Polivka turned aside 34 of 35 shots and claimed 1st Star honors in a 6-1 victory over the visiting Kamloops Blazers.  Polivka finished his week by stopping all 26 shots he faced for the shutout while again being named the game’s 1st Star in a 5-0 win over the Blazers in Victoria, B.C.  Polivka is in his second WHL campaign with the Royals.  He currently ranks fifth among WHL goaltenders in GAA and save percentage.
