Press Release
Edmonton, AB - Overage Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Cody Corbett has
signed a three-year entry level contract as a free agent with the
Colorado Avalanche, the Avalanche announced Tuesday.
Corbett, 20, will finish the season with the Oil Kings before joining the Avalanche organization.
"I couldn't be happier to be a part of an awesome organization like
Colorado," said the Lakeland, Minn. native. "This means I'm one step
closer to my ultimate goal of playing in the NHL."
Corbett
joined the Oil Kings in the midst of the 2011-12 season and won a WHL
Championship with the team that season. Though never drafted, he had
previously attended NHL training camp with the Minnesota Wild, including
an invite this fall.
Corbett will go down as one of the best
offensive defencemen in modern Oil Kings history. The blueliner has
played 182 games for the Oil Kings over three seasons, recording 29
goals and 124 points. On Sunday he set franchise records for goals (16)
and points (56) in a season by a defenceman, and he is currently tied
with teammate Griffin Reinhart for the most career goals by an Oil King
defender. He is also just one point shy of Mark Pysyk's team record for
most career points by a defenceman.
