MJHL League MVP Commits to UMASS-Amherst

Press Release

NEWARK, NJ – The New Jersey Rockets are pleased to announce that the 2012-2013 MJHL Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year Troy Conzo (’97 birth year/Nesconset, NY) has committed to UMASS-Amherst.  Conzo will become the second Rocket under Head Coach and Director of Player Development Bob Thornton to commit to the Hockey East school, following in the footsteps of Rocket alumni Kevin Boyle (’92 birth year/Manalapan, NJ, who saw the majority of the starts in net this past season for the Minutemen.

Conzo, who led the Rockets to their second consecutive Keegan Cup championship, was named Most Valuable Player after finishing third in the league in scoring with 69 points (33G 36A) in 35 league contests and added an additional 15 points (5G 10A) in the playoffs.  Conzo was also named to the All-MJHL First Team and the All-MJHL Prospects Team in addition to his individual awards.

“Troy had a tremendous rookie year in the MJHL,” said Thornton.  “To be among the youngest players in the league and be recognized as the best player in the league means you had a truly special season.  To cap it all off, Troy commits to UMASS-Amherst; a great accomplishment for a great player who has so much room for growth in his game.  Great things can be expected for Troy down the road.”

Conzo’s commitment is the third announcement from the Rockets MJHL franchise this season, joining MJHL alumni Jeremy Bracco (’97 birth year/Freeport, NY & committed to Harvard University) and Nolan Aibel (’97 birth year/Brookville, NY & commited to Yale University) in making their college choices.
