Warriors ready for camp, announce staff additions

Press Release

The Michigan Warriors, who will begin play in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) this fall, are getting set for their main tryout camp this weekend at the Flint Iceland Arena.

Players invited to the camp include the team’s draft picks and other prospects. Their performance in camp practice sessions and games will help determine who takes the ice for the team’s inaugural season at Perani Arena, which begins in September. The team expects to have its final 2010-11 roster in place in August.

“Not just any kid off the street is going to make this team,” said Warriors head coach and general manager Moe Mantha. “This is an extremely competitive league and the scouting staff and I are going to be watching these players very closely in live game situations.

“We want to be sure the young men who put on the Warriors sweater for Flint’s first NAHL game are highly skilled, have the hunger to win and are going to represent this community the way it deserves to represented.”

Camp activities will take place at Iceland Arena while the team’s home rink, Perani Arena, undergoes a series of continuing renovations in preparation for the upcoming season. Upgrades to the facility’s roof, food service and concessions areas are scheduled for completion by September.

The arena already has seen improved lighting installed since Firland Management began investing in the fan experience after taking over operations at the 4,000-seat facility earlier this year. Additional upgrades are planned.

The Warriors also announced additions to the team’s scouting and front office staff.

“Moe Mantha has hockey in his blood and the responsibility to develop these players into a winning team ultimately is his, but it’s the people behind the scenes who will really turn the Warriors into a source of community pride,” said Pat McEachern, a member of the team’s ownership group. “Our new scouting director and front office staff are among the best professionals in hockey.”

Joining the Warriors as scouting director is Tom Boileau, a longtime member of the Southeast Michigan hockey community. He is a certified Level 5 Master Coach and has been behind the bench at nearly every level.

Highlights of Boileau’s coaching career include time as the head coach and general manager of the Brownstown Bombers Junior A hockey club, an internship at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and three years as the director of player personnel for the Marquette Rangers of the NAHL.

He also serves as the head coach and general manager of Michigan Elite High School Hockey. Many of Boileau’s players have graduated from junior hockey to play at the NCAA level.

Sales director Tory Thompson Newberry joins the Warriors after working as a senior account executive for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, where she handled season tickets, group tickets, suites and corporate advertising.

Prior to her work with the Red Wings, Newberry spent four seasons as an account executive with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). There, she handled season tickets, group tickets, corporate advertising and the team’s hockey school.

The Warriors’ director of marketing and promotions, Jacob Wesolek, most recently served as the director of operations for the Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League (IHL).

A 2002 graduate of Central Michigan University, Wesolek got his start in hockey with the Spirit, coordinating sales initiatives and game-day promotions. He also spent time with the Omaha Knights of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the South Carolina Stingrays of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).

A Saginaw, Mich., native, Wesolek will be responsible for the team’s daily operations, including marketing efforts, promotions and public relations.

MONSTERS MAIN CAMP SET FOR NEXT WEEK: The Fresno Monsters, who will also begin their first season in the NAHL this fall, will hold their main camp - their last preseason tryout camp - next week at Selland Arena.

The Monsters are expecting over 150 players from around the world to be in attendance for a chance to earn a roster spot on one of the club's two teams: the NAHL club or the Tier III Junior A Western States Hockey League (WSHL) team.

The camp will conclude with an all-star game in which the best 50 players will compete for a spot on the team's NAHL squad.

"With our move to the North American Hockey League this off-season, we’ve drawn attention from hockey players worldwide," said Eric Ballard, head coach and general manager of the Monsters’ NAHL team. "We’re very excited to see some top caliber players at camp next week."

Tornado's Jones punches ticket to Denver

Press Release

The Texas Tornado has announced that forward Justin Jones has committed to the University of Denver (WCHA), where he has accepted a scholarship to play for the Pioneers beginning this fall.

“It’s tough to put into words how excited I am,” said Jones. “I’m very thankful to my family and the Texas Tornado for making this dream come true.”

In his first season with the Tornado in 2009-10, Jones played in 54 of the team’s 58 regular-season games, scoring seven goals and adding 13 assists.

“I really feel like this past season was my best, developmentally,” Jones said. “(Tornado) Coach (Tony) Curtale did a great job of recognizing what type of player I was, focused on those skill sets and really taught me a lot about the mental aspect of the game. We had such good chemistry in the locker room and that played a big part in my success as well.”

Jones elevated his game during the Robertson Cup Playoffs, as the 19-year-old finished second in team scoring with three points in five games.

“We’re very happy for Justin and his family, and it’s a testament to his work ethic and ability to be coached,” said Curtale. “Justin is an extremely good defensive forward and was one of the best skaters in the league. Both of those assets will come in handy at the Division I collegiate level.”

Jones spent 1999 and 2000 in Denver while his dad, Popeye Jones, played in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets. He will be the first ever player in the 11-year history of the Tornado to play for DU.

“I think Justin is going into a very nice situation at the University of Denver,” said Curtale. “He’s familiar with the city and, most importantly, he should be able to contribute from the start given his skill set.”

The University of Denver is one of the most storied programs in the history of college hockey. Its seven NCAA championships rank second all-time to the University of Michigan’s nine.

“Denver is a place I’m familiar with, so to be going back there to play college hockey for one of the most storied programs in the nation… I couldn’t be happier.”

Since the creation of the WCHA in 1959, the Pioneers have won nine regular-season championships 14 playoff championships.

Since 1999, the Tornado has moved over 110 players onto the NCAA and professional ranks, include Andy Wozniewski (Boston Bruins), Ben Bishop (St. Louis Blues), Al Montoya (Phoenix Coyotes) and Trevor Ludwig (Dallas Stars).

AJHL Mourns Loss of Team Founder Brian Nash

Press Release

AJHL President Craig T. Cripps, along with AJHL Chairman Greg Wood and the AJHL Board of Governors wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Brian Nash and the Grande Prairie Storm organization.

Former Storm President and team founder Brian Nash died this morning in an Edmonton hospital. He was 62.

“Brian was one of the Storm founders and was very instrumental in ensuring a strong organization,” said Storm president Lionel Jones. “He was a character that brought a lot of new ideas as well as new business to Grande Prairie.”

Nash was a two-time president of the Storm – 1998-2000 and 2007-2009. He was one of the original founders who each contributed to pay off a debt left over from the previous junior team and help get Junior A hockey back on track in Grande Prairie.

“When you wanted good input on different ideas he was there with solid advice as well as financial support if required,” said Jones. “I will also remember Brian for his many suits and dress shirts and colourful ties. Brian will be missed at the Storm family and board, but will not be forgotten how much he gave to the hockey team he loved and believed in.”

Nash grew up in the Peace Country in Hines Creek and worked in Fort Nelson, B.C. before moving to Grande Prairie in the mid-1970s to work with CP Air.

His community involvement began shortly after he arrived in the city.

“I have known Brian for 35 years and have lived in Grande Prairie all of my life and there are few people in Grande Prairie who contributed to such a wide cross-section of the community as much as Brian did,” said Storm business manager Don Moon, whose son Liam is Nash’s godson.

His foray into the local sports scene included being manager of the Grande Prairie North Stars of the Peace Cariboo Junior Hockey League in the late-1970s and early-1980s. He also backed Grande Prairie’s first summer hockey and figure skating school at the same time.

“He even had to act as coach of the North Stars for a game when the coach was suspended and as if his presence behind the bench in this huge fur coat wasn’t enough to attract some attention the fact he fell off the bench certainly was,” said Moon. “We had lots of laughs about his first and only coaching experience.”

In the early-1980s Nash was behind a bid to get the North Stars into the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The bid failed and the team eventually folded.

“When the team folded they left behind a huge debt and Brian reached into his own pocket to pay it off,” said Moon. “He did a lot of financial giving in the community and never asked for, or wanted, any recognition for it.”

And when the junior team of the time, the Chiefs, were in huge debt in 1995 and about to fold Nash was one of the first to get in line to help bail the Swan City Hockey Association out. The result was the formation of the Storm and Nash was one of the founders.

He served as president of the Storm from 1998-2000 and again from 2007-2009. At the time of his death he was on the Storm executive as past president.

He also served on the first Grande Prairie Stompede executive, was on the Grande Prairie Airport board and the Crystal Centre Advisory Committee. He and business partner Ken Truhn started Grande Prairie’s annual country music festival, Bud Country.

He left CP Air to get into the travel agency business purchasing Reilly McFarlane Travel and re-naming it Marlin Travel. He also started Nash Tours and over the years escorted hundreds of area people to Las Vegas to enjoy the National Finals Rodeo and NASCAR racing.

“Brian’s life may have ended sooner than it should have, but he had a very full life and enjoyed every minute of it,” said Moon. “He was an outstanding marketer and businessman. He has been a great mentor over the years. We are all going to miss him.”

Nash is survived by his son Shawn Schell; grand-daughter Taylor Schell; brother Dennis Nash; sister Ardith Hodson; and numerous other relatives and friends.

There is a Memorial Service for Brian at the Crystal Centre in Grande Prairie on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m.

Kootenay Ice Name Knoblauch Head Coach

Press Release

Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the Club has promoted Assistant Coach Kris Knoblauch (knob-lock) to be the fifth Head Coach in franchise history. Knoblauch, who has signed a two year contract with a club option for a third year replaces Mark Holick who was named Head Coach of the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League in May.

“After going through the numerous applicants for the Head Coaching position the decision to promote Kris was ultimately an easy one as he has been with the Hockey Club for three years and has worked in the Western Hockey League for the past four years. The philosophy of our organization is to hire and promote from within wherever possible. Kris is very familiar with our returning group of players which will make the transition from Assistant to Head Coach that much easier,” continued Chynoweth.

“When I came here three years ago it was one of my goals to someday be a Head Coach in the WHL. To be named as bench boss for an organization that gave me an opportunity and has moved on as many coaches as they have to professional hockey is definitely a huge honor. I look forward to the many challenges that lie ahead, but know the foundation is definitely in place to continue on with the winning tradition,” commented Kris Knoblauch.

Kris Knoblauch played three seasons in the WHL and was a member of both the Edmonton (1997-1998) and Kootenay ICE (1998-1999) organizations. He also played with the Red Deer Rebels (1996-1997) and Lethbridge Hurricanes (1998-1999). Upon graduating from the WHL he went on to play five years at the University of Alberta and was a member of the 1999-2000 Golden Bears team that won the CIS Championship. Kris achieved a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta. Prior to joining the ICE he was an Assistant Coach with the Prince Albert Raiders for one season (2006-2007).

Kris Knoblauch is a 31-year-old native of Imperial, Saskatchewan. He and his wife Autumn are the parents of one son – Marek (2).

Guentzel Joins UNO Coaching Staff

Press Release

The Des Moines Buccaneers announced that head coach Mike Guentzel has been named assistant coach for the men's hockey program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

"My experience in Des Moines was everything I thought it would be," said Guentzel. "Des Moines is a great organization with a great following, and I enjoyed my time here."

After joining the Bucs last summer following a season in which they won just 12 games, Guentzel led the team to a 20-34-6 record during the 2009-10 season.

It was the second stint in the USHL for the Minnesota native. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the St. Paul Vulcans (now Tri-City Storm) under current Sioux Falls head coach Kevin Hartzell during the 1988-89 season. Guentzel then became head coach of the club for three seasons, leading them to the Junior "A" national title in 1991. He was then named head coach of the Omaha Lancers and led them to a league-best 35-13-0 record and the Anderson Cup as regular season champions during the 1992-93 season. Under the guidance of Guentzel, the Lancers would also capture the Clark Cup and then repeat as playoff champions the following season (1993-94).

Guentzel was honored as USHL Coach of the Year following the 1991-92 season, sharing the honor with then Des Moines head coach Bob Ferguson. Guentzel was again named USHL Coach of the Year the following year, becoming the first USHL coach to win the award in consecutive seasons. He posted a winning record in his first five seasons as a head coach in the USHL earning a combined 151-80-8 record in the League.

The appointment to the staff at the University of Nebraska at Omaha marks the return of Guentzel to the collegiate ranks. He spent 14 seasons as assistant coach for the University of Minnesota men's hockey program, helping the Gophers capture back-to-back NCAA championships (in 2002 and 2003). He was also an assistant at Colorado College prior to his stint in Des Moines.

Guentzel joins two former USHL coaches on the staff at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The Mavericks are led by Dean Blais, who was the 2008-09 USHL Coach of the Year and led the expansion Fargo Force to the Clark Cup Finals that season. Mavericks assistant coach Mike Hastings is the all-time leader in USHL coaching victories after compiling 529 wins over 14 seasons with the Omaha Lancers. Hastings took over the Lancers immediately after Guentzel guided the team to back-to-back Clark Cup titles.

Guentzel will continue to assist the Bucs during the transition as a search for his replacement has begun.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrated its eighth season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2009-10. With over 240 players already committed to NCAA Division I schools and 35 NHL Entry Draft picks on League rosters this past season, the USHL is the nation's foremost producer of junior hockey talent. Press Release

St. Catharines, ON – The Niagara IceDogs are pleased to announce the signing of their two first round draft picks Jesse Graham and Luke Mercer.

Graham, chosen sixth overall in the OHL Priority Selection, is a 5'11" defenseman from Scarborough, ON who spent this past season with the Toronto Young Nationals of the GTHL. In 84 games, Graham picked up 14 goals and 74 assists for 88 points. He is described as a skilled defenseman who plays a very active high risk, high reward style of game.

Mercer, selected with the eighth overall pick, was a teammate with Graham on the Toronto Young Nationals and is a native of Brampton, ON. Last season, Mercer put up 9 goals and 51 assists in 72 games from the blue line and is described as an effective defender who contributes in both ends of the rink while playing with a ton of poise and composure.

Both players competed in the 2010 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament.

Head Coach Marty Williamson had this to say about Graham and Mercer, “These two young men will only strengthen our core of defensemen that continue to grow and improve together. Their ability to handle the puck in the offensive zone, while playing a shutdown defensive game will add depth to an already potent defense.”

The IceDogs are also pleased to announce the signing of former National Hockey League defenseman Mike Van Ryn as an Assistant Coach.

An NHL first round pick in 1998, Van Ryn spent seven seasons in the NHL, playing for the St. Louis Blues, Florida Panthers, and most recently the Toronto Maple Leafs. Over his career Van Ryn tallied 30 goals and 99 assists for 129 points, also adding 260 penalty minutes in 353 games. Van Ryn’s junior hockey career included one season with the Sarnia Sting in 1999-2000. In 61 games he collected 6 goals and 35 assists for 41 points.

With this addition, the Niagara IceDogs coaching staff is now complete. Van Ryn will join Head Coach Marty Williamson and fellow Assistant Coach Billy Burke behind the bench.

“As an organization, we are very happy to add Mike to our team. His experience as a player in the National Hockey League will be a valuable asset to our players” added IceDogs owner Bill Burke.

Also joining the Niagara IceDogs hockey operations team is John Neville, the new Director of Scouting for the club. Since 1988, Neville has been a scout with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and won a Memorial Cup with the team in 1993. Neville is also a close friend of Marty Williamson, having worked together in various capacities since 1990.

Selection Sunday: Stars Shape Roster

Press Release

TRAVERSE CITY - It was a bittersweet Sunday for Traverse City North Stars head coach/GM Anthony Palumbo.

The sweet: Palumbo and his staff hewed their 2010-11 roster from a weekend training camp at Centre ICE Arena that included veterans, tenders, draft picks, and the top performers from a summer of tryout camps.

The bitter: The least-favorite job of any coach.

"We had a very competitive camp, with a lot of energy and a lot of talented players," Palumbo explained. "We're pretty excited about the new roster, and think we have the potential to do very well. At the same time, we had to say good-bye to quite a few outstanding athletes to get down to roster size. It's hard to tell a kid that he isn't in your plans, and there were more than a few kids that are certainly going to go on to have great years in the sport ahead of them."

While the North American Hockey League's summer of expansion precipitated a roster size reduction, the Traverse City coaching staff tabbed 24 players from the field of hopefuls, which included 11 returning veterans, four tenders, five draft picks, and four players who played their way onto the roster during the camp season.

Four local players -Eric Rivard (Traverse City West HS), Jared Van Wormer (Traverse City Central HS), Mitchell Snider (TC West), and Matt Zaremba (Gaylord HS) - will don interlocking 'TC' sweaters this season. Rivard is a returning veteran, Van Wormer and Zaremba spent time with the North Stars last year, and Snider began last season with the now-defunct Alpena IceDiggers.

"We're looking to our veterans to really step up and take on bigger roles," Palumbo continued. "But some of these young kids are going to have to contribute as well. We're not going to be a team built on the superstar principal - we're going to need production from a lot of different guys every night."

Veteran winger Doug Clifford, who led the Stars last season with 53 points over 56 games and a +30 plus-minus rating, heads a group of returning forwards that includes Tim Opie (12G/19A), Kelin Ainsworth (30 pts.), Rivard (12 pts.), Taylor Burden 7 pts.) and late-season additions Alec Shields (10 pts. in 22 gms.) and Ryan Amin (8 pts. in 29 gms.). Snider, Van Wormer, Zaremba, Flint Generals product Nate Scurfield, Cody Loyer of Orchard Lake St. Mary's Prep, Detroit Catholic Central's Eric Fragoso, and Lansing Capitals midget major alum Michael Szmatula round out the front-liners.

Travis White enters his third season leading the Traverse City blue line corps, along with returning vets Curtis Heinz and Trevor Campbell, and newcomers Zack Dorer (Lansing Capitals MM), Chris Barile (Compuware MM), Robert Wiener (Lansing Capitals MM), Chris Leibinger (Saginaw Heritage HS), and Connor Schmidt (Little Caesars MM). Tyler Marble, who appeared in seven games with the Stars last season (3-3-1), and California netkeep Peter Emery are slated to handle goaltending duties.

"I think we're a team that skates well, that's pretty skilled, and hopefully is a balanced group," Palumbo said. "It's a roster with a ton of potential. Now, we begin to set about turning that potential in production."

The North Stars will open their practice schedule in late August in advance of their Sept. 11 season-opener at Chicago. Traverse City will host Springfield (Ill.) on Oct. 15.

Stars Cap Selection Season

Press Release

TRAVERSE CITY - At this time last year, Traverse City North Stars head coach/GM Anthony Palumbo was looking forward to a North American Hockey League season stocked with a veteran-laden roster. The club remained at or near the top of the North Division throughout the year, rolled through a pair of playoff sweeps, and landed the franchise's first-ever berth to the Robertson Cup championships.

This weekend at the team's annual training camp, Palumbo will map a return trip to the Robertson Cup, selecting the 2010-11 roster from a group that includes returning vets, draft picks, tenders, and the top talent from a summer of tryout camps. The yearly personnel turnover may well have been a bigger exodus than in previous summers, but Palumbo and his staff are optimistic about the new crop of players.

"We'll be a younger team than last year," he explained. "But we're also looking for some of our current veterans to take on some added responsibility. We want to see guys work hard this weekend, we want to see them compete, because we do have some key roles to fill."

The players will report to Centre ICE on Friday, split into three teams, and go head-to-head. Following Saturday morning's game, Palumbo and his staff will trim the field to two teams, and a pair of all-star contests will ensue on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The final roster will be announced following Sunday's 11 a.m. game.

"We're looking to see who has put in their work this summer, who is ready to earn a position," Palumbo added. "We have spots in net, on defense, and at forward."

Veterans attending this weekend's camp include captain Travis White, fellow defensemen Curtis Heinz and Trevor Campbell, and forwards Tim Opie, Ryan Amin, Alec Shields, Taylor Burden, Eric Rivard, and Kelin Ainsworth. Doug Clifford, the team's leading scorer in 2009-10, will not participate due to an off-season medical procedure. Six of the Stars' 10 tenders will be among the weekend hopefuls, as will six of seven draft choices.

With a re-tooled roster, Palumbo & Co. will have a stacked North Division to contend with this year. The group swelled to eight - including perennial power St. Louis - and only the top four clubs will advance to the playoffs.

"With a team of so many veteran players last year, I think we took a night off here and there, knowing we would probably be one of the four-out-of-five teams that made it (to the playoffs)," Palumbo said. "They were able to turn it on when needed, especially in the playoffs, but I don't think this year's team will be able to take any nights off and be able to score a 7-0 win in the playoffs like that group did. We'll have to bring it every night if we even want to qualify."

Rockets Honour Keith and Weber

Press Release

Amongst dozens of former members of the Kelowna Rockets, the Western Hockey League franchise honoured two of its highest profile alumni to kick off the Rockets Annual Alumni Weekend Wednesday night.

The Rockets announced the first honourees on a new President's Award are Olympic gold medalist Shea Weber and Stanley Cup champion Duncan Keith.

The President's Award, to be handed out to Kelowna Rockets players who have gained extraordinary recognition in the hockey world, was created this year.

"I felt it was time that we created something that acknowledged the guys that gain things for our country or our city that are very important," said Rockets president and general manager Bruce Hamilton, who talked of the importance of Team Canada's gold medal at the 2010 Olympics of which Weber and Keith played key roles.

"Probably the greatest accomplishment in hockey in Canada for a number of years and you guys stood in there and you never forgot where you came from: Your communities of Sicamous (Weber) and Penticton (Keith) were proud," said Hamilton.

Both players accepted their awards in front of dozens of former and current Rockets, coaches as well as spouses, girlfriends and children as former players gathered for dinner at Manhattan Point restaurant before a round of golf Thursday and a hockey game wrap up the festivities on Sunday.

"I just want to say that when I first came to Kelowna it was a tough decision," said Keith, who jumped from the NCAA to play a starring role for Kelowna. "But I think I knew within a couple days that it was the right decision. I want to say thanks for being such good friends."

Weber, just named captain of the Nashville Predators, praised the Rockets organization.

"I was a small town kid that got an opportunity to come to Kelowna and play hockey," said Weber. "I'd like to thank the Rockets organization. Without them I wouldn't have the chance to be where I am today."

An area near the Rockets dressing room, already home to paintings of former players, will also become home to the President's Award winners.

The Rockets Alumni Weekend features a sold out golf tournament as well as a hockey game on Sunday at the Capital News Centre. Tickets are available at all Scotiabank Kelowna branches for the hockey game.
