Kings, Blizzard and Pistons make major trades

Press Release

The leading scorers of OCN Blizzard and Steinbach Pistons will have a change of address after two major trades today.

Zeanan Ziemer has been traded by the Blizzard to Dauphin Kings, who gave up three, highly promising players to acquire the veteran forward.

“We had to give up youth to acquire a veteran who makes us a better club today,” Kings’ Head Coach Marlin Murray said today. “Dauphin Kings are hosting the RBC Cup this spring; there’s lots of pressure on us to win this season.

“Zeanan fits right in our top six forward group. He’s a dynamic player, who is highly skilled and a game breaker. We gave up a bit of our future to win now.”

Ziemer has 42 points (13-29) in 28 games played this season. Going to OCN are 17 year old forward Brett Fargher, 17 year old defenseman Justin Slobozian and the MJHL list rights of 18 year old defenseman David Greyeyes and future considerations.

In a second major trade, Steinbach Pistons traded their leading scorer, Ryan Griffiths, to Swan Valley Stampeders for 18 year old forward Tyler Peers and 18 year old forward Francois Houde.

This is Griffiths second stint with the Stampeders, having played the majority of last season there after being traded by Dauphin.

Griffiths was sent to Steinbach in September to provide the Pistons much needed leadership and veteran status.

“Obviously, we're familiar with Ryan and what he brings to our club,“ said Stamps GM Guy Vestby. “He'll fit right in with our club.“

Vestby said it was difficult to trade Griffiths last September, but admitted he always had thoughts of bringing him back if possible.

“Ryan did a great job in Steinbach,“ said Vestby. “He helped them grow as a hockey club and provided them veteran leadership.“

Griffiths, a native of Aruada, Co., had been the Pistons' leading point getter with 31 (17-14).

OHL rolls to another win over Russia

Press Release

Team OHL took a decidedly Team Canada approach to Game 4 of the SUBWAY Super Series in Windsor on Monday and the results were impressive.

The OHL squad set a physical tone early that they maintained throughout the game and relied on Plymouth Whalers goaltender Matt Hackett to put in an outstanding performance in net. They also threw in a substantial amount of offensive spark for good measure to cruise to a 5-2 win over Russia.

The win was the OHL’s second in the series after an identical score victory over Russia in Barrie on Thursday and maintained their perfect record in the seven-year history of the series.

“We’re in the business of winning,” OHL coach Dave Cameron of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors said. “You never want to lose no matter what game you are playing. We’re the only league that hasn’t been beaten yet so yeah, we’re proud of that.”

Hometown hero Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires and Nazem Kadri of the London Knights each had a goal and an assist to pace the OHL’s offence.

Adam Henrique of the Spitfires opened the scoring midway through the first period. Tyler Toffoli of the Ottawa 67’s added his second of the series on a powerplay midway through the second period and then Hall counted on the powerplay for what proved to be the game-winner.

Kadri added a short-handed marker early in the third period to push the OHL lead to four before Kirill Petrov snapped Hackett’s shutout bid with a little under six minutes to go in the game. Maxim Kitsyn also scored for Russia before Zack Kassian of the Peterborough Petes rounded out the scoring with a powerplay goal with 1:29 left to go.

Veterans like Kassian, Stefan Della Rovere of the Barrie Colts and Zac Rinaldo of the London Knights supplied the physical presence for Team OHL, putting a lot of pressure on the Russians in their own end of the ice.

“You want to do that to be successful,” Kassian said. “We had some pretty big hits out there and won a lot of battles on the ice. They are very skilled and if you don’t finish your checks on the next thing you know it’s in the back of your net. You try to eliminate space and eliminate them as much as you can.”

Hackett turned aside 30 of the 32 shots he faced and may have used that performance to earn an invite to Canada’s final selection camp before the World Junior Championships next month.

“I thought he was excellent,” Cameron said. “It’s great as a coach with Team Canada to see him play. It gives me a chance to get a look at him prior to the selection camp. He handled himself really well tonight.”

The OHL was three-for-eight on the powerplay while Russia was one-for-six.

Mucha owns numerous team records, including games played by a goalie (213, tying him for sixth in WHL history), minutes played by a goalie (11,964, ninth in league history), saves (6,045, sixth in league history) and is tied for the franchise lead in shutouts, with seven. This season Mucha is 9-6 with a goals against average of 3.13, a save percentage of 90.5% and one shutout.

Mucha was drafted by Portland in the second round of the 2004 WHL Bantam Draft, 25th overall, and played two games with the Winterhawks as a 15-year-old during the 2004-05 season. In the 2005-06 season Mucha played 32 regular season games, and took over in net during the postseason, helping lead the Winterhawks to a first round upset over the Seattle Thunderbirds in seven games. Mucha has also spent time in NHL training camps with the Phoenix Coyotes and his hometown Edmonton Oilers.

“Kurtis Mucha has been a consummate professional in his time with the Winterhawks, and the number of franchise records he owns indicates his importance to this team during his time here,” said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “Kurtis is a terrific young man, and this was a very difficult decision to have to make. We thank Kurtis for all of his contributions to this organization, and wish him nothing but the best in Kamloops.”

With the trade of Mucha to Kamloops, it leaves the Winterhawks with two goaltenders: 19-year-old Ian Curtis, who has a record of 7-3 this season, and 17-year-old Mac Carruth, whom the team signed on November 12.

Springfield linemates ready for college in Mass

Press Release

The Springfield Jr. Blues have announced that second-year forward Nick Curry has committed to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (Hockey East) for next season.

Curry, a 20-year-old from Bettendorf, Iowa, ranks third in NAHL scoring with 30 points (nine goals) through 22 games.

“We’re very excited for Nick to finally know where he’ll spend his next four years,” said Jr. Blues head coach Andy Maher. “He’s paid his dues and worked extremely hard the last few years to earn this opportunity with one of the best college hockey programs in the country.”

Also heading to school in Massachusetts next season is Curry’s linemate, Jared Rickord, who announced his intentions to attend Bentley University (Atlantic Hockey) earlier in the year.

Rickord, a 20-year-old Skokie, Ill., native, is right behind Curry on the NAHL’s scoring chart with 10 goals for 27 points.

“We couldn't be happier for Jared,” said Maher. “His education was at the top of his list when it came to his college decision and we expect him to step into Bentley’s lineup and contribute right away.”

Curry credits the NAHL for providing him the development and exposure necessary to compete in one of the county’s top college conferences next season.

“It’s a very good league,” he said of the NAHL. “There are no easy games and you’re forced to play your very best every game. Any team can be beaten on any given night and that really makes it a lot of fun.”

Maher is bullish on Curry’s potential in Hockey East.

“He has the ability to step in right away and be a impact player,” said the coach. “We wish him the best of luck when he leaves us here in Springfield.”

OHL defeats the Russians

Press Release

Game 3 of the SUBWAY Super Series turned into an opportunity for some emerging stars to shine.

OHL sophomores Jeff Skinner of the Kitchener Rangers and Tyler Toffoli of the Ottawa 67’s both got on the scoreboard to help Team OHL to a 5-2 win over the Russian Selects in Game 3 of the SUBWAY Super Series on Thursday in Barrie.

Skinner opened the scoring on a powerplay midway through the first period and then added another powerplay marker late in the third period to pad the OHL lead.

“It was a lot of fun playing with all these great players,” Skinner said. “I was just happy to be here and was lucky to get the two goals.”

Despite having a terrific game, Skinner admitted that he was a bit nervous before the opening faceoff.

“There were some butterflies,” Skinner said. “But after a few shifts you sort of get the jitters out and get into the flow of the game. That really helps out a lot.”

Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors’ coach Dave Cameron was the coach for Team OHL and said that he wasn’t surprised to see some of his younger players have success in the game.

“You know they are all capable of stepping up,” said OHL coach Dave Cameron of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. “What makes them real good hockey players is a lot of times the better the competition, the quicker they are to step up. It’s always nice to see the young guys do it.”

The Russians responded with a pair of goals early in the second period before Taylor Beck of the Guelph Storm tied the game midway through the game on a powerplay. Greg Nemisz of the Windsor Spitfires put the OHL ahead for good less than four minutes later. Toffoli rounded out the scoring with less than five minutes to go in the game.

“I thought it was typical of a game like this,” Cameron said. “I thought it was a real solid effort - a real honest effort and a good result.”

Peter Di Salvo of the Barrie Colts started the game and allowed two goals on 14 shots and then Michael Hutchinson of the London Knights came on midway through the game and turned aside all seven shots he faced.
