Springfield linemates ready for college in Mass

Press Release

The Springfield Jr. Blues have announced that second-year forward Nick Curry has committed to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (Hockey East) for next season.

Curry, a 20-year-old from Bettendorf, Iowa, ranks third in NAHL scoring with 30 points (nine goals) through 22 games.

“We’re very excited for Nick to finally know where he’ll spend his next four years,” said Jr. Blues head coach Andy Maher. “He’s paid his dues and worked extremely hard the last few years to earn this opportunity with one of the best college hockey programs in the country.”

Also heading to school in Massachusetts next season is Curry’s linemate, Jared Rickord, who announced his intentions to attend Bentley University (Atlantic Hockey) earlier in the year.

Rickord, a 20-year-old Skokie, Ill., native, is right behind Curry on the NAHL’s scoring chart with 10 goals for 27 points.

“We couldn't be happier for Jared,” said Maher. “His education was at the top of his list when it came to his college decision and we expect him to step into Bentley’s lineup and contribute right away.”

Curry credits the NAHL for providing him the development and exposure necessary to compete in one of the county’s top college conferences next season.

“It’s a very good league,” he said of the NAHL. “There are no easy games and you’re forced to play your very best every game. Any team can be beaten on any given night and that really makes it a lot of fun.”

Maher is bullish on Curry’s potential in Hockey East.

“He has the ability to step in right away and be a impact player,” said the coach. “We wish him the best of luck when he leaves us here in Springfield.”
