Ward named an assistant for the USA World Junior Squad

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Tom Ward, director of hockey and head coach of the boys' prep hockey team at Shattuck-St. Mary's High School (Minn.), has been named an assistant coach of the 2010 U.S. National Junior Team.

The U.S. National Junior Team will participate in the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2009 - Jan. 5, 2010 in Regina and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Ward is currently in his 11th season at Shattuck-St. Mary's and has led the boys' hockey program to five USA Hockey Youth National Championship titles, including three (2005, 2007, 2008) at the Tier I 18 & Under level and two (2001, 2003) at the Tier I 17 & Under level.

Prior to working at Shattuck-St. Mary's, he previously served as an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota men's ice hockey team for four seasons (1995-99), helping lead the Gophers to a share of the 1997 Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season championship.

Ward also served on the coaching staff of the United States Hockey League's St. Paul Vulcans for six seasons (1989-95), the last three campaigns as head coach and general manager.

NOTES: The U.S. exhibition game against North Dakota will be broadcast on tape delay Dec. 20 on the NHL Network (U.S.) at 12 p.m. EST
