Calvert player of the week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that forward Matt Calvert of the Brandon Wheat Kings is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 15. Calvert scored an impressive 11 points in three games including five goals and six assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-2.

Calvert began his week with a first star performance during a special afternoon game on Remembrance Day Wednesday where he scored two goals and added an assist in a 7-3 win over the Prince George Cougars at Westman Place in Brandon. On Friday night he scored one goal and one assist despite a 4-3 loss to the Saskatoon Blades and was named second star of the game. His week wrapped up with a career-high six point game scoring two goals and adding four assists including the helper on the game-winner Sunday as third star of the 8-7 overtime win over the Regina Pats.

Calvert, a 19-year-old from Brandon, MB, is playing in his overage season and third in the WHL with the Wheat Kings. He is currently eighth in WHL scorers with 33 points in 20 games played scoring 15 goals and 18 assists. Calvert, a fifth round selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, will compete in the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup in his hometown of Brandon.

Also considered for the award this week was Ethan Werek of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs and Philippe Cornet of the QMJHL’s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Werek scored seven points including three goals and four assists in three wins for the Frontenacs, while Cornet scored four goals including two game-winners and added two assists for six points in three wins for the Huskies. Both players are representing their regional leagues in the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series.
