NAHL approves sale, relocation of Owatonna membership

Press Release

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced that its Board of Governors has approved the transfer of membership and relocation of the Owatonna Express to Odessa, Texas, for the 2011-12 season.

The team will change its name to the Odessa Jackalopes and play its home games out of the 5,131-seat Ector County Coliseum in Odessa.

"We're excited to welcome the Jackalopes to the North American Hockey League family," said NAHL commissioner Mark Frankenfeld. "Odessa already boasts a long and proud hockey tradition and, with an experienced ownership group and management team committed to its continued success, we have no doubt the organization will flourish, both on and off the ice."

Before joining the NAHL, the Jackalopes served as the Central Hockey League AA affiliate of the New York Islanders. Their head coach is Paul Gillis, who spent over a decade as a player in the NHL and another decade coaching in the professional ranks. He is assisted behind the bench by Matt Cressman.

"The Jackalopes will be celebrating their 15th anniversary of hockey in the Permian Basin next season, and this move to the NAHL will allow us to continue to have hockey here for another 15 years and beyond," said Jackalopes general manager Joe Clark. "Our fans expect to see an entertaining product on the ice, and they'll get it.

"Players in the NAHL, including those in a Jackalopes jersey, have their whole careers in front of them," Clark added. "We'll do whatever it takes to help these young men launch their careers and move to a higher level, just as we've done in the past."

The Jackalopes are the fifth NAHL team to call Texas home, joining the Amarillo Bulls, Corpus Christi IceRays, Texas Tornado and Wichita Falls Wildcats.

"Odessa's addition is sure to not only strengthen the already-spirited rivalries amongst our existing Texas teams, but ease the travel demands of our student-athletes as they strive for excellence not only on the ice, but in the classroom and community as well," said Frankenfeld.

The Owatonna market has been part of the NAHL since the 2005-06 season. In its first year as the Southern Minnesota Express, the team won the league's Central Division regular-season title. It also made two appearances in the Robertson Cup Championship Tournament (2006 and 2007) in addition to developing and advancing dozens of players to the collegiate and professional ranks.

"I can't say enough about Owatonna and what it's meant to our league, " Frankenfeld said. "It's a great hockey community and one that's provided so many great opportunities for our student-athletes over the years."

The Jackalopes will hold a pre-draft camp from May 13-15 at Center Ice of Dupage in Glenn Ellyn, Ill. More information and registration forms can be found on the team's official Web site, jackalopes.us.

"The process established for the exceptional player is an extensive evaluation of the player in all aspects of life,” said OHF Executive Director Phillip McKee. “Aaron should be very proud, just as the OHF is of him, for achieving the exceptional player status."

NAHL approves Minot, North Dakota membership

Press Release

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced that its Board of Governors has accepted the membership application for an expansion team in Minot, North Dakota.

The team, which will be named the Minotauros (Tauros), will begin play in the 2011-12 season and play their home games in the existing main rink of Maysa Arena, presently a twin-sheet complex being expanded to become a multi-purpose facility with three ice surfaces.

"We couldn't be happier to welcome the Tauros to our league," said NAHL commissioner Mark Frankenfeld. "Minot is a great addition to our Central Division footprint and, behind a sound, hockey-savvy ownership group committed to both the local community and player development, the Tauros represent everything the NAHL stands for, both on and off the ice."

The Tauros are owned by Heavy Metal Hockey Inc. (HMH) and PlayForward Sports Group Inc. - two companies focused on furthering the development and training of hockey players and all-round athletes.

Benjamin J. Johnson, president of HMH, will serve as the team's head coach and general manager.

Johnson boasts an impressive resume both as a player and a coach, having guided the prestigious Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school to back-to-back national championships in addition to coaching in Europe.

A Duluth, Minn., native, Johnson skated for Duluth East High School before playing junior hockey in the United States Hockey League. He also played two seasons in the Western Hockey League - he competed for a Memorial Cup championship with the Spokane Chiefs in 1998 - and won a gold medal as a player with Team USA at the 2007 Deaf Olympics.

"We're very excited to join a premier league and re-establish a junior hockey presence in Minot," said Johnson. "We share the NAHL's commitment to excellence, both on the ice and in the classroom.

"Our top priority is producing further opportunities for players to develop their skills, advance to the next level and, ultimately, become future leaders in their respective communities."

Marty Murray, Jarrod Olson, Terry Dunbar and Jason Blackburn - all of whom are committed to the team's developmental philosophy and bring a solid work ethic and strong leadership skills to the organization - round out the Tauros coaching contingent.

"We're excited with the staff we have in place," said Johnson. "All of our coaches have a tremendous amount of experience in the game and are well respected in the hockey community."

Minot is no stranger to junior hockey. In 2000-01, the Minot Muskies played in the America West Hockey League, which merged with the NAHL in 2003. In its only season, the team fashioned a 38-18-4 record and averaged over 1,700 fans a game in attendance.

From 1994-97, the Minot Top Guns were members of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

"There's such a rich hockey history in Minot, especially junior hockey," said Frankenfeld. "Behind the experience and leadership of Ben Johnson and the rest of the Tauros' ownership group and coaching staff, we expect that tradition to flourish again for years to come."

The Tauros are the second NAHL team to call North Dakota home, along with the Bismarck Bobcats. The close geographic proximity of the Aberdeen Wings and Alexandria Blizzard also benefits the participating student-athletes from a travel perspective while generating more rivalries within the Central Division.

"Our entry into the NAHL is sure to bring even more entertainment to the passionate fans in an already-competitive division and provides an exciting brand of hockey for the league's newest community," said Johnson.

Minot also showcases a thriving youth hockey system with 500 players participating in its various programs. As a community-based organization, the Tauros are eager to work closely with players, coaches and families with the goal of seeing many local prospects skating for the Tauros in the not-too-distant future.

"The aspirations of the Minotauros organization is to have Minot become the destination of choice for all prospective hockey players who are looking for an organization to grow with and the opportunity of advancing to the next level," said Johnson.

Over 70 USHL players have earned NCAA Division I college scholarships in the time that Hartzell has been with the Stampede while he has coached 20 players who have been NHL Draft picks during his USHL career. Four former Stampede players that Hartzell has coached have played in the NHL this season – Andreas Nodl (Philadelphia Flyers), Dan Sexton (Anaheim Ducks), Ben Holmstrom (Philadelphia Flyers), and Nate Prosser (Minnesota Wild).

Hartzell played two seasons in the USHL with the St. Paul Vulcans (1976-78) prior to the League becoming an all-junior league. He went on to a collegiate career at the University of Minnesota and was part of a national championship at the school under legendary coach Herb Brooks.

Hartzell becomes the seventh coach in USHL history to accumulate 400 wins and the second this week as Mark Carlson earned his 400th with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on March 22nd.

USHL Honors - Week 26

Press Release

The United States Hockey League today announced the weekly award winners for the 26th week of the 2010-11 USHL regular season.

Congratulations to forward John Siemer of the Waterloo Black Hawks, named CCM Offensive Player of the Week; defenseman Jordan Schmaltz of the Sioux City Musketeers, selected as CCM Defensive Player of the Week; and Matt Skoff of the Sioux City Musketeers who earned honors as the Reebok USHL Goaltender of the Week.

Siemer had a career night when he scored seven points (4g, 3a) for the Black Hawks in Wednesday's victory over Chicago. It was the most points scored in a USHL game since Preston Callander had eight points (4g, 4a) in a game for the Lincoln Stars over a decade ago (October 27th, 2000). Siemer had collected six points in 28 previous games during his first USHL season. The 19-year-old scored a goal in both the first and second period, and then scored two goals in a span of 2:26 in the third period. It was the first four-goal game in the USHL in over a year. All four of his goals came at even strength. The native of Baldwin Park, California currently has 13 points (9g, 4a) in 31 games this season.

Schmaltz recorded six points (3g, 3a) and a plus-four rating to lead the Musketeers to three victories during the week. He assisted on the game-winning goal in Tuesday's 3-1 win against Omaha. The 17-year-old defenseman then had three points (2g, 1a), including the game-winning goal, in Friday's 4-2 victory over Tri-City. Schmaltz finished his week with two points (1g, 1a) in Saturday's 2-0 shutout of Sioux Falls. It is the second straight week and fourth time this season that Schmaltz has won the USHL weekly award. The Verona, Wisconsin native has nine points (4g, 5a) over his last four games and now leads all USHL defensemen in scoring with 34 points (11g, 23a) in 47 games this season.

Skoff was in net for all three Musketeers victories posting a 1.00 goals-against-average and .962 save percentage. He made 25 saves in Tuesday's 3-1 win against Omaha and 24 saves in Friday's 4-2 victory over Tri-City. The 19-year-old then stopped all 27 shots he faced in Saturday's 2-0 win vs. Sioux Falls. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Skoff, tying for the USHL lead. It also set a new Musketeers season record for shutouts, surpassing the mark of four set by Jeff Sanger during the 1997-98 season. Skoff is 6-0-1 over his last seven starts and has totaled 19 wins this season. The McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania native has won 40 games over his two USHL seasons.

OJHL ANNOUNCES MVP

Press Release

The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Ryan Demelo of the North York Rangers (photo credit - Izak Westgate/HHOF) has been named the 2010-11 recipient of OJHL Most Valuable Player.

The second year netminder was a pillar between the pipes for the Rangers this season, finishing the year with a 24-17-2 record while playing in 44 of the club’s 50 games throughout the year. Demelo’s play was ultimately the reason the Rangers not only earned a playoff berth, but finished in third place in the South Division, earning the all-important preliminary round bye.

Despite playing the third most games (44) and second most minutes (2,592:59) of any OJHL goaltender this season, Demelo still managed to post impressive numbers that all ranked in the top ten statistically. His 24 win total was tied for sixth best in the league and he would post the seventh best goals against average (2.68), fifth best save percentage (.919%) and third best save total (1,314), as well as recording four shutouts, tied for second best among all goalies.

The 20-year old native of Brampton, Ontario was named first star of the game nine times throughout the year and it is not hard to see why. From October 8 to November 14, Demelo would win nine of 10 games and twice during the course of the season he would record five game winning streaks.

It was in the all-important shootout, perhaps, where he was most effective. The lanky netminder, standing at 6’2”, 170 lbs., would allow only one goal on 16 attempts during four shootouts, winning three of those games. Those totals include, stopping all seven shooters on the South-East Conference champion Wellington Dukes to earn the Rangers a 3-2 victory on October 1, and blanking their division-rival, the Upper Canada Patriots, 1-0 in a shootout on January 29 with playoff positioning on the line.

Along with being named the OJHL’s Most Valuable Player, Demelo was also named a South-East Conference 2nd Team All-Star.

Jordan Ruby of the Wellington Dukes was runner-up in the OJHL award balloting to Demelo. The 20-year old native of Tavistock, Ontario, finished second among netminders with 26 victories this season, while posting the third best save percentage (.932%) and fourth best goals against average (2.21). He was a key member of Team Canada East, capturing a silver medal at the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge and was named OJHL December Player-of-the-Month, as well as a South-East Conference 1st Team All-Star.

Below is the complete list of OJHL Award winners for the 2010-11 season:

Awards:
Most Valuable Player Ryan Demelo North York Rangers

Brown Bears' Rial commits to Minnesota

Press Release

The Kenai River Brown Bears have announced that defenseman Chris Rial has committed to the University of Minnesota (WCHA) for next season.

Rial, a 20-year-old from Las Vegas, has 14 goals for 26 points through 55 regular-season games this year.

“Committing to Minnesota was very easy for me,” said Rial. “Obviously, the rich history in their hockey program and academics was a big part of my decision. That and the WCHA is the top-notch conference in college hockey and to be a part of that is really exciting.”

Minnesota first contacted Rial, who competed in the first North American Hockey League (NAHL) Top Prospects Tournament of the season, which was held in Massachusetts in December, after September’s NAHL Showcase Tournament. Rial and the Golden Gophers’ coaching staff stayed in touch throughout the year.

“In February, I was lucky enough to be brought down on an official visit and shortly following that I made my commitment,” said Rial.

And Rial credits the NAHL and his seasoning with the Brown Bears for helping him secure his Division I college plans.

“Kenai River has been a blast,” he said. “(Brown Bears head) Coach Oliver (David) has done so much for me and the entire team.

“It’s no secret there’s not a lot to do up here but play hockey and work out, so I think being here really helped me get better.”
