Coaching Staff Announced for Ontario’s Under-17 Team

Toronto - The Ontario Under 17 Program Policy Committee is pleased to announce Troy Smith as the Head Coach of Ontario’s Under 17 team through the 2011-13 seasons. Troy is currently an Assistant coach with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League.

"The committee is pleased that Troy has agreed to become the head coach of Ontario’s Under 17 Team that will be competing at the 2012 World Hockey Challenge, stated Chairman Ted Baker.” It is always a difficult task to select the right person to coach a team of this calibre given the number of qualified applicants, however, the committee agreed that Troy’s knowledge, experience and leadership qualities made him the right choice to coach our Under 17 high performance athletes who will compete at the 2012 World Hockey Challenge being held in Winnipeg, Manitoba.”

"It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I accept the head coaching position of Ontario’s Under 17 team, stated Smith. I am honoured the committee has chosen me and I look forward to leading our Under 17 team towards a repeat gold medal performance at the 2012 World Hockey Challenge.”

The Under 17 Policy Committee is also pleased to announce that they have selected Wayne Clark and Roger Hunt as assistant coaches of Ontario’s Under 17 team. Mr. Clark is currently an assistant coach with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL while Mr. Hunt is an assistant coach with the OHL’s Oshawa Generals.

The coaching staff together with Director of Operations Rob Kitamura will be attending regional Under 17 identification camps throughout the province during the months of April and May 2011.

The identification process will conclude with the Under 17 Provincial camp which is being held in Thunder Bay, Ontario from July 6-10, 2011. The announcement of the final team roster will be made in mid to late November 2011.
