Bobcats acquire Danford, Klein from North Iowa

Press Release

With only 17 games left before the end of the North American Hockey League’s (NAHL) regular season, the Bismarck Bobcats continue to make a splash in the trade market, acquiring forward Tyler Klein and defenseman Ben Danford from the North Iowa Outlaws for future considerations.

The move to acquire Klein and Danford, both of whom represented the Outlaws earlier this month at the Sherwood/NAHL Top Prospects Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., comes just a week after the Bobcats traded for Air Force Academy recruit Aaron Quick from the Wichita Falls Wildcats.

“I’ve had a chance to talk to both of these young men since the trade was finalized, and they’re both extremely excited to be Bismarck Bobcats,” said Bobcats head coach Byron Pool. “And we’re just excited to have them; both guys are very strong hockey players and will make our roster that much stronger from top to bottom.”

Klein came to the Outlaws in a trade with the St. Louis Bandits early this season and has put up 11 goals and 16 assists on the year, including 10-14=24 statline with North Iowa. He was a part of the Bandits’ run to their third straight Robertson Cup championship in 2009, registering a goal and two assists during the postseason for the eventual champs.

Hailing from Fargo, Klein becomes the third North Dakota native on the Bobcat roster, joining Minot’s Bryce Schmitt and Bismarck’s Tyler Richter.

Danford, from Stillwater, Minn., is a third-year NAHL veteran who began his career with the Southern Minnesota Express and moved with the team when it relocated to Detroit to become Motor City Machine last season. Traded from the Machine to the Outlaws in late 2008, Danford has been a mainstay for the last season-plus on North Iowa’s blue line.

This year, Danford has piled up nine goals and nine assists and departs North Iowa as the Outlaws’ top-scoring defenseman and sixth-leading scorer overall.

RUTT HEADS HOME TO MAINE

Here's my story

Press Release

Hooksett, NH - The New Hampshire Junior Monarchs are pleased to announce that defenseman Jacob Rutt of Scarborough, ME, has committed to the University of Maine for the fall of 2011.

In his first year in the EJHL after starring at Scarborough High School, Rutt has caught the attention of many a scout and was recently listed on the NHL Central Scouting bureau's Mid Term Rankings list. An athletic defenseman, who was a star baseball player before turning his focus to hockey, Rutt possesses a deadly shot, and raw puck-carrying ability. A tireless competitor, Rutt also adds a physical element to every shift he takes, and never shies away from a chance to play the body.

Things of late had really been heating up for Rutt in regards to the recruiting process, as a number of schools had begun pursuing him aggressively. The decision to stay in Maine and play for the team that he had grown up watching was an easy one however, and he is very excited for the opportunity he has been given.

Rutt has been on a tear lately with 4 goals in his last 5 games and he has started to become much more of a threat to carry the puck end-to-end every chance he touches the puck. With another year of junior hockey next season to fine-tune his game, Maine should be getting a very good defenseman in the 2011.

Jacob is the son of Lisa and Norman Rutt of Scarborough, ME.

Thrilling Overtime for USHL All-Star Game

Press Release

Des Moines Buccaneers forward Ryan Walters registered the fourth hat trick in USHL All-Star Game history, but it was defenseman Nick Bailen who was the hero for the East Division scoring the overtime winner.

In a game that saw the clubs trade goals all evening, it was only fitting that it needed more than 60 minutes to decide the outcome. It was a night full goals, saves, great passes, and several big hits. Nate Condon (Fargo Force) opened the scoring just under three minutes into the contest to give the West a 1-0 lead. Tom Serratore (Youngstown Phantoms), a late All-Star addition, and Max Cook of the Indiana Ice responded with a pair of goals to swing the game in favor of the East. Ryan Walters (Des Moines) scored the first of his three goals to even the contest heading into the first intermission.

Walters gave the West their second lead of the game early in the second period. Shane Berschbach was the second Indiana Ice player of the night to tally goal when he evened the game later in the frame on a brilliant pass from Ice teammate Max Cook.

Tyler Barnes (Waterloo Black Hawks) helped the East regain the lead, but Ryan Walters finished off his hat trick a little more than six minutes later to once again make the scored tied.

After 60 minutes of play, the game went to overtime with each team skating four players a side. It appeared to be heading to a shootout but defenseman Nick Bailen fired a puck that found the back of the net with just 13 seconds remaining in the overtime period giving Team CCM (East) the victory.

Troy Grosenick (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) earned the victory in net making 14 saves after entering the game midway through the second period.

Nate Condon was named player of the game for Team Reebok while Nick Bailen was honored as player of the game for Team CCM. Ryan Walters earned the Ron Woodey Award as All-Star MVP with his three-goal performance.

Cormier suspended for the remainder of the QMJHL regular season and playoffs

Press Release

BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, January 25, 2010 – The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Disciplinary Prefect, Raymond Bolduc, today announced that he has suspended Rouyn-Noranda Huskies forward Patrice Cormier for the remainder of the QMJHL regular season and playoffs.

"I would like to begin by saying how happy and relieved I am to see how much Mikael Tam’s condition has improved over the past few days. I hope he makes a quick recovery and that he is back playing soon," said QMJHL Commissioner Gilles Courteau. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teams’ medical staffs as well as the doctors and nurses at Rouyn-Noranda Hospital for their extraordinary work. Also, I would like to thank both organizations for supporting their players throughout this ordeal. Even though Patrice Cormier’s gesture was reprehensible, he must be able to count on the same support systems as any other Quebec Major Junior Hockey League player. Therefore, I have mandated Natacha Llorens, the coordinator of the League’s Players Help Program, to contact Patrice in order to offer him the support which he might need."

The Commissioner continued by explaining the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s process in the matter of disciplinary sanctions.

"We were made aware of the incident Sunday evening. Then, after reviewing the play on Monday morning, our Disciplinary Prefect, Raymond Bolduc informed me of his decision to suspend Patrice Cormier indefinitely. From the moment a player is suspended indefinitely, there is absolutely no reason to rush the process. In the case of incidents which we know will carry minimal disciplinary sanctions, decisions are usually made quickly in order to avoid penalizing teams who often play a high number of games in a relatively short time frame. But, in extraordinary cases such as this one, in order to protect the integrity of the process and the players involved in it, it is essential to take enough time to gather the facts by talking to the on-ice officials, reading their report and collecting the players’ and the organizations’ testimonies. Then, an independent committee is consulted before analyzing the facts and rendering a decision. In this case, the process ended this week-end."

Following the Commissioner’s opening statement, the Disciplinary Prefect, Raymond Bolduc, announced his decision.

"At the very start of the process, I read on-ice officials’ report. Then, I met with the Quebec Remparts, Mikael Tam, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, and Patrice Cormier and consulted the Disciplinary Committee before going over the facts and making my decision. The player’s gesture dangerous and intolerable. Our ultimate responsibility must be the safety of our players. It is our number one priority. Consequently, I have decided to suspend Patrice Cormier for the remainder of the QMJHL regular season and playoffs."

The Commissioner reiterated his commitment to eliminate all forms of gratuitous violence from the game.

"Hockey is a fast and physical game, and the conditions in which players play it necessitate that respect play as much a role as the rules and the disciplinary sanctions which are in place to protect them. But, regardless of the rules or the support systems we offer, as the game’s principal actors they are responsible for their actions. As such, they must be held accountable as do the coaches who lead them. Fundamentally, the players’ respect level for each other has to change markedly and I plan on addressing this important issue. As League Commissioner, it is my duty to put in place measures to educate our players and to hold them accountable. Gratuitous violence has no place in our great game. Through perseverance, we will ultimately eliminate it. The QMJHL must be a hockey league from which careers begin and flourish, not where they end."

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Mission Statement

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s mission is to develop players for professional hockey while supporting them throughout their academic endeavors in order to mold them into responsible and educated citizens. It must offer high entertainment value within a profitable framework in order to ensure the continued success of its activities.

Zack Kassian suspened 20 games

Press Release
The Ontario Hockey League today announced the result of its review of an incident which occurred in the game played in Windsor on Thursday, January 14th, 2010 between the Windsor Spitfires and the visiting Barrie Colts.

The incident in question involved player Zack Kassian of the Windsor Spitfires Hockey Club who was assessed a 5 minute major and game misconduct for charging as a result of his hit on Barrie Colts’ player Matt Kennedy who sustained a head injury on the play.

In making the announcement as the result of the review, Commissioner David Branch stated that… "while the League is persuaded that player Zack Kassian did not leave his feet prior to contact with the Barrie player, it is the position of the League that player Zack Kassian checked the unsuspecting Barrie player while such player was in a vulnerable position without having been in the possession of the puck. Rage tabs Robinson head coach, general manager

Press Release

The Dawson Creek Rage, which will begin play in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) next season, has announced that Scott Robinson has been named the team’s head coach and general manager.

Robinson has previous coaching experience in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCHL) and the Kootenay International Junior League (KIJHL). He was named Coach of the Year in the BCHL in 2003-04 and 2006-07.

“This is great news for the team and we’re very excited,” said Pat Rorison, president of the DC Rage Hockey Society. “Scott has what it takes to make the team work and to provide leadership and hockey skills.

“The recruiting/hiring committee received many applications for this position and, after hours of review, Scott's abilities and experience placed him at the top of the list."

A former professional player with the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars (he played one game in 1989-90) and the IHL’s Milwaukee Admirals and Kalamazoo Wings, Robinson, from 100 Mile House, B.C., played junior hockey with the Seattle Breakers of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and collegiately at the University of Calgary.

"I cannot begin to say how happy I am with being chosen as the first GM and coach of Dawson Creek’s entry into the NAHL,” said Robinson. “The people that I’ve been in contact with over the entire process have been nothing but professional and positive. Having been raised in the central interior, I had definite expectations and hopes for the kind of people I’d meet in the Peace country. To a person, they all met or exceeded what I’d hoped to see.

"My involvement with the BCHL has made me aware of the efforts of this ownership group for some time,” he added. “This group, who would not be denied, has laid a foundation for success that’s unprecedented in this province. To entrust me with their first team makes me proud from Day 1. With this trust comes a great responsibility and I’ll do my utmost to live up to the highest of expectations and represent the city and entire region with the integrity that I’ve witnessed from the people already in place. We will work relentlessly at icing a championship team.

“When adversity comes - and it will – we’ll face it head on and pull together and, all along the way, we’ll enjoy the challenge. I can't wait to get it done with and for the people of Dawson Creek.”

Scott and his wife, Paulyne, have two sons.

Spooner paces Cherry to Top Prospects Game win

Press Release

Ryan Spooner of the Peterborough Petes got credit for the winning goal but his coach Don Cherry gave the credit for the turning point in the game to his teammate Austin Watson.

Watson helped Team Cherry kill off a pair of late powerplays and made two key shot blocks - the second of which led to Spooner’s shorthanded goal that stood up as the game winner - in Cherry’s 4-2 win over Orr in the Home Hardware CHL-NHL Top Prospects Game in Windsor on Wednesday.

“Two blocked shots on a five-on-three - that was the turning point of the game,” Cherry said as Watson was about to be interview after the game. “That was unbelievable. He’s the guy.”

“It was five on three and that’s hard for anyone to kill that off but I just got out there and tried to get in the shot lanes,” said Watson, who played for the Spitfires until earlier this month and received a warm ovation when he was introduced. “Fortunately - or unfortunately - I got into a few. That was a big kill for our team. It was good for the win.”

Team Orr opened the scoring when Nino Niederreiter of the Portland Winterhawks scored late in the first period. Emerson Etem of the Medicine Hat Tigers tied the game for Cherry with a short-handed marker midway through the second period.

Orr took the lead again early in the third period when Jeff Skinner of the Kitchener Rangers counted but Jordan Weal of the Regina Pats scored 30 seconds later to tie the game and the Spooner scored the winner with just over eight minutes left to play. Louis-Marc Aubry of the Montreal Juniors rounded out the scoring with an empty netter with a minute to go in the game.

“I’m going to be happy for a year,” Cherry said. “If you don’t think that there’s intensity in these games, you should be behind that bench or in the dressing room. These guys are playing for keeps. You could just feel the energy out there.”

Alexander Petrovic of the Red Deer Rebels had a pair of assists in the win while Weal, Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires, Devante Smith-Pelly of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors and Brandon Archibald of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds picked up singles.

Hall, the top rated player in the NHL mid-term rankings of the NHL draft, was named player of the game for Cherry.

“Today was a really good experience,” Hall said. “As Don said, that was the furthest thing from an all-star game. There was a lot of intensity and a lot of skill out there.”

Skinner, Brandon Gormley of the Moncton Wildcats and Mark Pysyk of the Edmonton Oil Kings had helpers for Team Orr.

Skinner, who won the breakaway contest in the skills competition last night, was Team Orr’s player of the game.

“It’s just an honour to play for Bobby Orr and it was a great game,” Skinner said. “It was a tough one to lose but I think our team battled hard and it was a lot of fun.”

Calvin Pickard of the Seattle Thunderbirds got the start for Team Cherry and gave up one goal on 14 shots before Maxime Clermont of the Gatineau Olympiques took over midway through the game and allowed one goal on 17 shots for the win.

“It was a wonderful hockey game,” said Orr, who had won the past three meetings between the coaches. “These are 40 kids that are the future of the NHL and I think every kid represented himself Very well. It was a fun day and it was great to see the kids perform like they did.”

Mark Visentin of the Niagara IceDogs got the start for Team Orr and turned aside all 19 shots he faced before Louis Domingue of the Quebec Remparts allowed three goals on 11 shots in the loss.

Blades Sign Levi Bews to WHL Standard Player Agreement

Press Release

The Saskatoon Blades are pleased to announce that forward Levi Bews has been signed to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

Bews, a 15-year-old from Longview, Alberta, was selected by the Blades in the 2nd round (42nd overall) in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft.

“After exploring my options and choices, I decided the Blades were the best choice,” said Bews. “I love the speed of the WHL game and am just thrilled to sign with the Blades.”

The 6’1”, 192-pound forward has 9 goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 24 games played with the UFA Bisons of the Alberta Midget Hockey League this season. Last season in 25 games played with the Notre Dame Hounds bantam squad, Bews had 33 goals and 32 assists for 65 points in 25 games played.

A right winger, Bews participated in the 2009 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup in Blackfalds, Alberta in late October. He scored the game winning goal in the last minute of the Gold Medal Game as Team Alberta captured first place in the tournament. Bews also participated in the prestigious Mac’s Midget AAA Tournament in Calgary over the holiday season where his team, the UFA Bisons, lost 1-0 in the final. Levi was named the Bison’s Player of the game for his efforts in the championship.

“Levi is a big, strong and talented player we were very fortunate to get when we drafted him in the second round,” said Blades General Manager and Head Coach Lorne Molleken. “Education was a very important factor in the decision for him and his family. Because of the increased focus the Western Hockey League has put on schooling, they made their decision knowing he will be taken care of.”

According to Levi’s mother, Dawna, the WHL’s Education Package played an important part in the decision. “Levi has always been a good student so schooling was going to be important,” said Dawna. “He talked to numerous people to get facts and feedback on what he should do and ultimately, we realized he wasn’t compromising his school and can still play the high level of hockey for his age.”

Levi is now eligible to play up to five games in a Blades’ uniform this season until his midget season is done.

Columbus Blue Jackets scout Brian Bates will guide the East Division All-Stars. He has been a member of the Blue Jackets scouting staff since the team's inaugural season of 2000-01. Bates has over 30 years of hockey experience and has served at various levels as a player evaluator and scout. He has scouted players at the high school, junior, and college ranks, including John Moore, 2008-09 USHL Defenseman of the Year, whom the Blue Jackets selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Bates played hockey at Bemidji State before an injury ended his playing career.

Montreal Canadiens scout Pat Westrum will lead the USHL All-Stars from the West Division. He is currently in his fourth season with the Canadiens after serving in a scouting role with the Phoenix Coyotes for three seasons. Last season he scouted Louis Leblanc, 2008-09 USHL Rookie of the Year, who the Canadiens selected in the first round (18th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Westrum was a coach at the high school level in Minnesota for six seasons which included a state championship in 1996 with Apple Valley. He continues to run coaching clinics for USA Hockey in his native Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota and captained the Gophers to the WCHA championship during the 1969-70 season before embarking on a nine-year professional career, which included six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA).

Joining the NHL scouts behind the bench during the All-Star Game will be USHL assistant coaches Doug Johnson and Jon Rogger. Johnson is currently in his second season with the Omaha Lancers, who lead the USHL West Division. He helped lead the Lancers to a 32-win season in 2008-09 and their 20th consecutive playoff berth. Rogger is also in his second USHL season after helping lead the Green Bay Gamblers to the Anderson Cup as regular season champions during the 2008-09 season. The team also produced the largest turnaround in USHL history as they improved 50 points in the standings from the previous season.

SOUTH PREVAILS IN ALL-STAR GAME

Press Release

Hooksett, NH- Brian Schultz scored the game-winner fourteen seconds into overtime to lift the Southern Division All-Stars over the Northern Division in a thrilling contest Monday afternoon.

The game started out with both teams flying and though the North had a few excellent scoring chances, the South controlled the play, peppering goaltender Brian Billett with shots.

The Southern Division team finally found a crack in Billett with 4:13 on the clock when Brian Schultz fed Jack Callahan at the point. Callahan ripped a shot that was tipped by Shane Walsh into the net.

The North threatened to put one past goaltender Brad Barone in the waning minutes when Joe Pendenza sent a pass to Joe Wilson in the slot, but Wilson could not finish the play.

The Apple Core quartet of Corey Lillie, Mike Garlasco, Jacob Hoefler, and Arthur Griem, along with Charlie Coyle, pressed hard and took target practice at Billett, but the goalie was equal to the task.

With around 1:30 remaining, Justin Breton, Joe Pendenza and Brad Peltz each had chances to jam the puck home, but Barone slammed the door on each of them to preserve the 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

The break did little to slow the teams down and once again, but Barone and Billett each turned away every shot.

A faceoff in the South zone provided the opportunity for the North to get on the board. With 2:17 gone in the second, Joe Pendenza won the draw and sent the puck back to Justin Breton, who unleashed a shot from the circle that found its way to the far corner of the net.

Less than two minutes after the North tied the game, Brian Schultz and Chris Wagner had a chance to break the deadlock, but Billet made a pad save on Wagner's shot.

The North's Trent Ruffolo nearly broke the tie in the fifth minute when Jamie Ferullo sent him on a breakaway, but Barone read him perfectly and made the save.

Both goaltenders were relieved midway through the second after stellar performances, and Brian Robbins and Courtney Lockwood took over between the pipes.

The South gave Robbins a rude welcome, scoring with 9:35 on the clock when Jacob Hoefler sent a pass from the corner to Charlie Coyle. Coyle saw Arthur Griem waiting in the slot, fired the puck over, and Griem banged it home.

Despite the early slip-up, Robbins proved to be a brick wall for the rest of the frame. Regardless, the South continued to unload until the final buzzer. John Mousso nearly extended the lead to 3-1 with mere seconds remaining after taking a feed from Colin South, but Robbins made a sprawling save to prevent further damage.

Both Lockwood and Robbins came up big at the beginning of the third period. Robbins added Wagner, Schultz, and Luke Hannon to his list of victims after stopping each of them in a scrum in front of the net.

After the ensuing faceoff, Anton Bernard nearly tied the game, but his shot rang off of Lockwood's mask.

With 10:45 remaining, Luke Hannon scored from a faceoff with assists from Jon Swavley and Will Fredrick.

Just over a minute later, Brice O'Connor sent Ryan Farnan and Joe Wilson skating in on a 2-on-1. Wilson fired the puck and Lockwood made the save, but Farnan pounced on the rebound and shot it top shelf to pull the North within one.

Hannon restored the two-goal lead with 5:40 to play after Fredrick found him in the slot and he pushed the puck past Robbins.

Fifteen seconds later, the North pulled within one when Trent Ruffolo set up Jamie Ferullo along the boards. Ferrulo shot and Zak Stone tipped the puck past Lockwood.

With 2:31 to play, Joe Pendenza won a faceoff in the South zone and shot the puck through Lockwood's legs to send the game to overtime.

Merely 14 seconds into the extra session, Shane Walsh picked up a puck behind the North net and passed to Brian Schultz in the slot. Schultz redirected the puck past Robbins to give the South the win.

The Eastern Junior Hockey League would like to congratulate all participants in the 2009 EJHL All-Star Classic. Special gratitude is extended to the Sean Tremblay and the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs for hosting the festivities, Pop Tops Sportswear for providing the uniforms, and Pepper Sawyer for producing the line charts.
