Fraser suspended for 3 additional games

Press Release

The disciplinary prefect of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Raymond Bolduc, suspended today the Acadie-Bathurst defenseman, Jérémie Fraser, for 3 additional games to the automatic suspension for a total of 4 games. The suspension was handed out following an incident that occurred on February 26th versus the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

Here is the rationale that led to the decision:

The player at fault:

Shot the puck at the opponent’s zone.
Pursued his opponent in a fore-check position.
Pushed his opponent’s back at the red goal line level.
Was at his first offence

The opponent:

Lost his balance and hit the boards with force.
Couldn’t protect himself
Was injured on the play

The decision was rendered after reviewing the videotape of the incident, gathering the testimonies from the players and the organizations involved, reading the officials’ report and consulting the independent committee in the matter of disciplinary sanctions.

The video of the event will be available shortly.

SJHL REGULAR SEASON AWARD WINNERS

Press Release

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

SJHL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Jesse Ross, Weyburn Red Wings
1991 F Jesse Ross (Regina SK) was the integral figure on the league’s best line all season long with Keegan Bruce and Coltyn Sanderson. Ross ended up leading the league in scoring with 46-goals and 35-assists in 56-games. His play was a big reason why the Red Wings were able to spend the majority of the season in first place in the Sherwood Conference.
Runner-up: Blake Tatchell, Battlefords

SJHL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Blake Tatchell, Battlefords North Stars
1991 F Blake Tatchell (North Battleford SK) finished second in the SJHL scoring race with 42-goals and 44-assists. He also finished 31-points ahead of the next highest scoring player on his team. In addition, the Stars were pretty much guaranteed a win whenever Tatchell recorded two points or more. His hockey career will continue next Fall at Alaska-Anchorage (NCAA Div I).
Runner-up: Andrew Johnston, Humboldt

SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR
Carson Grolla, Notre Dame Hounds
1992 D Carson Grolla (Trail BC) is the envy of a lot of Junior ‘A’ defensemen. He skates well, shoots the puck hard, plays a smart game in his own end, makes a good first pass, and has a real competitive edge. Grolla finished the season with 16-goals and 25-assists in 57-games. He also led the team in penalty minutes with 121.
Runner-up: Woody Klassen, Battlefords.

SJHL TOP GOALTENDER
Davis Jones, Nipawin Hawks
1992 G Davis Jones (St. Albert AB) backstopped a Hawks team that finished with the fourth best record in the league despite a great deal of turnover from last year’s squad. He finished second in the league in goals against average (2.42) and third in save percentage (.920), all the while finishing second in minutes played and tied for first in wins.
Runner-up: Alex Rajote, La Ronge & Mitch Kilgore, Weyburn

SJHL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Devin Buffalo, Flin Flon Bombers & Brandon Millin, Notre Dame Hounds
1993 G Devin Buffalo (Wetaskiwin AB) accomplished a rare feat in that he was a rookie out-of-province netminder, who was able to step into a number one role with an SJHL team that spent the majority of the year contending for a top spot in the standings. Buffalo, with a young team in front of him, had a 3.36-GAA and a .909 SPCT.
1992 F Brandon Millin (Port Moody BC) played on the number one line for the Hounds in his first Junior ‘A’ season. He fired 21-goals and 22-assists to finish second on the team in scoring and tied for second in league scoring amongst rookies.

SJHL COACH OF THE YEAR
Doug Johnson, Nipawin Hawks
The Nipawin Hawks were the most improved team in the standings from 2010-11 to 2011-12. Johnson was the architect of the surge as he moved players in and out of the line-up until he found the perfect mix to coach. The Hawks were extremely tough to play at the start of the season, and after a rough 25 game spell at midseason, they got back on track after Christmas and went into the playoffs as a team known for its work ethic and desire to play hard for their boss.
Runner-up: Kevin Hasselberg, Battlefords

SJHL SCORING CHAMPION
Jesse Ross, Weyburn Red Wings
1991 F Jesse Ross (Regina SK) enjoyed a tremendous coming out party in 2011-12, leading the league in points with 91 and goals with 46. His 46 goals was one shy of the number of points he had in 2010-11.
Runners-up: Blake Tatchell, Battlefords; Ian McNulty, Melville.

LOWEST GOALS AGAINST AVERAGE
Matt Hrynkiw, Humboldt Broncos
1992 G Matt Hrynkiw (Saskatoon SK) got off to a hot start, had a bit of an early season slump, and then caught fire after December as he finished with four shutouts and a 2.28-GAA. He also posted a .921-SPCT.
Runner-up: Davis Jones, Nipawin Haks

GROOMBRIDGE NAMED TRAINER-OF-THE-YEAR

Press Release

The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Andrew Groombridge (photo credit - Craig Campbell/HHOF) of the Georgetown Raiders has been named the inaugural recipient of the OJHL Trainer-of-the-Year Award.

Groombridge has been the Head Athletic Trainer with the Raiders for the past 12 seasons, beginning his tenure in Georgetown during the 2000-01 season. The 51-year old native of Sarnia, Ontario joined the Junior ‘A’ club with a wealth of experience already in his back-pocket, having started his training career back in 1974 with his high school football team. His experience over 38 years includes time spent in football, lacrosse, fast-pitch softball, and of course hockey, as well as participating in more than 30 national championships at the minor, amateur, college and professional level.

“Drew,” as he his known by many, is as dedicated and well-respected a trainer as there is in the OJHL with contributions for not only the hometown Raiders, but often the visiting team squads as well. During his 12 seasons with the Raiders, the club has captured three OJHL regular season titles, would host and win the 2005 Dudley-Hewitt Cup and participate in the Royal Bank Cup that was held in Weyburn, Saskatchewan that season. He would use that experience at the Royal Bank Cup to assist the Streetsville Derbys as hosts of the National Junior ‘A’ Championship the following season. Also during this time, the Level Three Hockey Canada certified trainer would assist with three OHA Under-17 camps, three OHA High-Performance camps, the 2009 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge Evaluation Camp, the 2010 Under-20 Three Nations Cup held in Norrtalje, Sweden and the 2011 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge.

A fifteen time All-Star in the various sports he has covered, some of Groombridge’s other sports accomplishments include national championships with the 1983 and 1984 Point Edward Pacers Junior ‘B’ Lacrosse Club, as well as with the 2005 and 2006 St. Thomas Centennials Senior Men’s Fast-pitch Softball Club. He was also the Head Athletic Trainer for two seasons with the Detroit Turbos professional lacrosse club, just prior to joining the Raiders, and went home to assist the Petrolia Squires Senior Club when they hosted the 2001 Allan Cup in Sarnia, Ontario. In 2010, his 36 years of service were recognized as he was Inducted into the Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame with the Special Achievement Award, for the person who over a number of years has made significant contributions to sports beyond athletic endeavours.

Truly a “Jack-of-all-Trades,” Groombridge is also the trainer for the Halton Hills Bulldogs Junior ‘B’ Lacrosse squad and the St. Thomas Centennials Fastball team, along with finding time to hold down full-time employment. Despite the busy schedule, he can still be found wandering the corridors of the Alcott Arena seven days a week, making sure the Raiders are well taken care of for their next challenge.

The OJHL Trainer-of-the-Year Award is awarded to the trainer, therapist or equipment manager that is adjudged to be the best at his profession for his/her member club throughout the course of the regular season, while past experience and time served will be taken into consideration.

Dave Campbell of the Whitby Fury and Drew Laskoski of the Newmarket Hurricanes were co-runners-up in the OJHL award balloting to Groombridge.

Campbell has spent the past six seasons in the OJHL, originally with the Pickering Panthers and now with the Fury, while Laskoski has been in the OJHL since 1987, spending 10 years with the Stouffville Spirit, before joining the Hurricanes for the past 15 years.

The inaugural OJHL Executive of the Year Award recipient will be announced later this week.

“Although we are disappointed that Brett is not joining our team, we completely understand the rationale behind Tampa’s decision,” explained Tory. “Steve had to make a decision that was best for his hockey club and Brett’s development.”

“Dealing with (Yzerman) on this since the WHL Trade Deadline was both professional and ongoing,” Tory continued. “Steve promptly, and regularly, kept us updated on Brett’s progress and situation. I’d like to sincerely thank Steve and the Tampa Bay Lightning organization for the time spent with us on this situation and the respect that they showed to our hockey club.”

NAHL announces Combat Hockey 3 stars of the week

Press Release

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) today announced the Three Stars of the Week presented by Combat Hockey for the week ending February 26, 2012. The Three Stars of the Week is a weekly feature during the 2011-12 regular season that honors the top performing players each week of the regular season as nominated by their respective teams.

1st Star: Jacob Meyers, goaltender, Alexandria Blizzard
Alexandria goaltender Jacob Meyers, 20, is really starting to fine tune his game. This past weekend was no exception as Meyers recorded a perfect couple of performances in goal to help Alexandria to a weekend home sweep of the Coulee Region Chill. The Minnetonka, Minnesota native stopped a perfect 60 of 60 shots during the weekend. It included back-to-back 30-save performances during Friday night’s 2-0 win and Saturday night’s 10-0 win. Meyers (6’1/180), a Quinnipiac recruit, ranks in the Top 4 in almost every NAHL goaltending category including: wins (26), goals against average (2.02), save percentage (93.1%) and shutouts (6). “Anytime you have a goalie that doesn’t give up a goal, it makes it easy on everyone else,” said Blizzard head coach Doc DelCastillo. “Despite the scores, Jacob faced a lot of shots and his saves gave us momentum. He gives the team a lot of confidence when he is in goal.”

2nd Star: Mitchell Snider, forward, Traverse City North Stars
Traverse City forward Mitchell Snider, 20, had a career weekend as he racked up eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) in a two-game home sweep of the Chicago Hitmen. He was also an eye-popping +7 during the weekend series. On Friday night, the Traverse City native set a new career high with four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in a 9-0 win over Chicago. The next night, Snider (5’9/165) equaled his career high again with another four point game (2 goals, 2 assists), but this time recorded the game-winning goal as Traverse City beat Chicago, 6-1. Snider’s eight point weekend was a quarter of his 32 points that he has accumulated to date. “Mitchell’s #1 asset is his speed. When he is in the line-up and at full strength, we are a good team,” said North Stars head coach Chad Fournier. “He has made huge strides this season and really improved as a player. He is the emotional leader of our team on and off the ice.”

3rd Star: Robert Nichols, goaltender, Wenatchee Wild
It may seem like a broken record, but the key to Wenatchee’s success this year has been because of their goalies. This weekend was no exception as goaltender Robert Nichols, 19, strung together two remarkable starts as the Wild swept a pair of games against South Division powerhouse, the Topeka RoadRunners. Nichols (5’11/180) stopped a combined 53 of 55 shots on the weekend, good for a 96.4 save percentage and his goals against average was 0.96 for the weekend. On Friday, the Dallas, Texas native made 19 saves in a 4-1 win over the RoadRunners. On Saturday, Nichols was even better, recording a season-high 34 saves in a 2-1 shootout win over Topeka, which included stopping five shooters in the shootout. Nichols is statistically the #1 goalie in the NAHL, leading the league in both goals against average (1.58) and save percentage (93.7%). “Robbie should get more credit for our success,” said Wild head coach John Becanic. “Although we are a defense first team, it all has to start in goal and Robbie solidified that this weekend.”

Honorable Mention (alphabetical): Marc Biggs, forward, Texas Tornado – Ben Carey, forward, Wenatchee Wild – Brian Christie, forward, Topeka RoadRunners – Garret Clemment, forward, Fairbanks Ice Dogs – Kyle Cook, forward, Springfield Jr. Blues – Wehebe Darge, forward, Alaska Avalanche – Tanner Fahlstedt, forward, Alaska Avalanche – Bryce Fink, goaltender, Topeka RoadRunners – Joe Kalisz, forward, St. Louis Bandits – Brett Lubanski, forward, Kenai River Brown Bears – Ken MacLean, goaltender, Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings – Justin Moody, forward, Alexandria Blizzard – Patrick Moore, forward, Bismarck Bobcats – John Olen, forward, Janesville Jets – Steve Perry, goaltender Fairbanks Ice Dogs – Jack Prince, forward, Texas Tornado – John Rey, defenseman, Amarillo Bulls – Eric Rivard, forward, Traverse City North Stars – TJ Sarcona, forward, Amarillo Bulls – Chris Sitler, forward, Springfield Jr. Blues.

MJHL Game cancelled

Press Release

The suspended game re-scheduled for Feb. 26 (Neepawa at OCN originally scheduled on December 18) will not  be played.

The reason for this is that the outcome of the game has no bearing on the final league standings, nor the MJHL Draft in terms of final position for the teams involved.

"Financially, it also makes sense," said MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis.

"The game in question will result in significant savings for OCN."

On December 18 the game was suspended after one period with Neepawa ahead 3 – 2. The players stats earned will be retained and the final standings will show each team with one less game than the other teams in the league.

Otters Statement on Tullio Arena Negotiations

Press Release

In our history, the Erie Otters have never discussed our business dealings with the press. In light of recent speculation regarding the Erie Otters, we would like to clarify our position regarding our commitment to Erie.

Mr. Sherwood Bassin, General Manager and Majority Owner of the Otters, and Mr. Casey Wells, Executive Director of the Erie County Convention Center Authority, have met several times over the course of the season to negotiate a new lease for the Otters at Tullio Arena. Their most recent meeting Thursday afternoon was an open and healthy discussion.

Mr. Bassin expressed his ideas and concerns regarding the structure of the present lease, and Mr. Wells was very receptive to those concerns. Both gentlemen expressed their ideas through brainstorming and have asked for a couple of weeks to resolve issues and sign a commitment.

The $42 million renovation of Tullio Arena, which began in December, is a positive step forward for the future of the Otters in Erie.

The Otters will not comment any further on speculation of the team being relocated or lease negotiations until a new lease is secured with the Erie County Convention Center Authority.

DINEEN NAMED HUMANITARIAN-OF-THE-YEAR

Press Release

The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Matt Dineen (photo credit - Graeme Reid/Newmarket Hurricanes) of the Newmarket Hurricanes has been named the inaugural recipient of the OJHL Humanitarian-of-the-Year Award.

Matt Dineen is the 20-year old captain of the Hurricanes playing in his fourth full OJHL season. Throughout his four years of representing his hometown Junior ‘A’ club, the reliable defenceman has been the embodiment of a leader both on and off the ice for the team, never turning down a request to assist within his community.

When Hurricanes management and staff ask for players to represent the club at various extra-curricular off-ice functions, Dineen has always been one of the first in line to volunteer his services and his off-ice endeavours include school visits, community living events, minor hockey requests, team sponsorship functions and charitable efforts.

Dineen’s list of deeds includes public speaking at schools, minor hockey practices/events and television as a spokesperson for the Hurricanes Tobacco Free program; among other subjects. He also assists special needs groups during community living events, often being recognized at the rink by people from those groups and he never refuses a request for a quick chat, an autograph or a picture. The community role model can also be found assisting at minor hockey practices and games or representing the Hurricanes at sponsor functions and the local Santa Claus parade.

On the ice, the 6’1”, 185 lbs. rearguard has been a rock on the blueline for the Hurricanes during the club’s constant progression the past four seasons, including an OJHL regular season title last year. A steadying influence on the club’s back-end, Dineen has posted similar stats each of the past three seasons, including 22 points and a team-high 11 power play assists this year.

The OJHL Humanitarian of the Year is awarded to the player adjudged to have made the most notable
contribution to his community in a humanitarian sense, including, but not limited to charitable work, school
visits and extra-curricular off-ice activities.

Adam Shibuya of the Toronto Junior Canadiens is runner-up in the OJHL award balloting to Dineen. The 18-year old native of Toronto, Ontario played in his first full OJHL season and his off-ice endeavours include numerous hours spent volunteering at the Geneva Centre for Autism, as well as many community events for the Junior Canadiens.

The inaugural OJHL Trainer and Executive of the Year Award recipients will be announced next week.

FULTON COMMITTED TO RPI

Press Release

Vaughan Vipers alternate captain Travis Fulton (photo credit - Brian Scott/OJHL) has confirmed his commitment to join the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers beginning with the 2012-13 ECAC season.

The Oakville, Ontario native made the jump to junior hockey full-time last season as a member of the Georgetown Raiders, after playing four games in 2009-10 with Bramalea. Despite his smaller stature, listed at 5’9”, 170 lbs., the 18-year old rookie instantly tasted success in the OJHL, recording 34 points in 44 regular season games playing on a veteran-laden squad, and another four points in five playoff games. In April, he was selected by former Atlanta Thrashers head coach John Anderson to compete as a member of Canada’s (comprised of OJHL players) Under-20 Three Nations Cup squad that competed in Finland and, despite failing to win a game, the experience and competitiveness was not lost on the diminutive forward.

After only one game this season, Fulton was moved to the Vipers, and he immediately made an impact with his new squad, recording his first goal just over three minutes into his first game with the club while playing on the Vipers first line. He would finish the season as the club's leader in virtually all offensive categories, including goals (24), assists (38), points (62), power play goals (11), shorthanded assists (3) and game-winning goals (5).

Congratulations to Travis and best of luck next season and beyond and his continues his hockey career!

South 1 vs. West 0 – In a tight checking game that featured just 36 combined shots, the South got a late 1st period goal from Taylor Herndon (Texas) to edge the West, 1-0.  Herndon, who tied for the most goals (3) and points (5) in the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament, was set up for the lone marker of the game by Texas teammate Jordan Greenberg and Amarillo Bulls forward TJ Sarcona.  The rest of the game was dominated by the goaltenders on both sides.  Amarillo’s Gregg Gruehl, who finished as the Top Prospects top goaltender, only allowed one goal in over 88 minutes of play.  Both he and Peter Traber (Topeka) shared in the shutout, while Wenatchee’s Greg Lewis was stellar as well stopping 19 of 20 shots as he played the entire game.  Boxscore
Midwest 5 vs. NAHL 18U Selects 1 – The Midwest team picked up their first win of the Top Prospects Tournament by defeating the 18U Selects, 5-1.  St. Louis Bandits forward Stephen Bopp had a big day, picking up a goal and two assists and fellow Bandits teammate Cody Ganchar had a goal and assist as did Springfield’s Josef Pontasch.  The teams traded goals in the first period with Drew Slaton (St. Louis) scoring for the Midwest and Jude Warner (Amarillo) scoring the 18U Selects.  After that, it was all Midwest as they outshot the Selects, 43-29.  Springfield’s Gavin Tufte scored to make it 2-1, which was followed by Bopp’s goal midway through the game to make it 3-1.  Ganchar and Pontasch both scored in the 3rd period to make it a 5-1 final.  Tomas Sholl (Fresno) played the entire game for the Selects making 38 saves, while Tony Kujava (Janesville) and Aaron Davis (Coulee Region) split the time between the pipes for Midwest combining to make 28 saves. Boxscore

Central 5 vs. North 2 – In a match-up of undefeated teams to determine the 2012 NAHL Top Prospects Champion, it was a three-goal 3rd period which led the Central to a 5-2 win over the North.  The Central would finish as the only undefeated team in the Tournament at 3-0, while North dropped their first game of the event, finishing with a 2-1 record alongside the South.  Mike Moroso (Port Huron) scored the first goal of the game for the North.  It was Moroso’s 3rd goal of the event, which tied for the tournament lead.  However, the Central struck for three goals in the 2nd period to blow the game wide open.  Aberdeen’s Cory Ward tied the game 1-1 as Wings teammate Lane Mahoney and Christian Folin (Austin) picked up assists.  Just :22 seconds later it was Minot’s Jadin Martin scoring with assists to Bryce Schmitt (Bismarck) and Brandon Wahlin (Austin).  Schmitt and Wahlin would set up the 3rd Central goal just :18 seconds later as Alexandria’s Charlie Aus lit the lamp.  After Brock Raffaele (Kalamazoo) scored to make it 3-2, Bismarck’s Buster Hebda scored twice in the 3rd period to put the game out of reach and give the Central team the title.  Tyler Bruggeman (Austin) and Tommy Burke (Bismarck) each gave up a goal in the Central win, while Peter Megariotis (Port Huron) gave up three goals and Jamestown’s Joe Ballmer gave up one goal in the loss.  Boxscore
